Manziel Talks Manning Camp, Twitter, Scrutiny And The Upcoming Season

gfx - they said itTexas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel — obviously the sensation of this year’s SEC Media Days — just sat down with a large media group.  Here’s how it went down:

*  The scrutiny of him has been “blown a little bit out of proportion.”  Manziel said he’s still trying to live his life and “hopefully that won’t upset too many people.”

*  How do you think defenses will challenge you this year?  “Maybe bring some more blitzes.  I haven’t really thought that much about it.”  (That might concern an Aggie fan or two.)

*  Manziel said he and his teammates earned the right to have some fun this offseason.

*  “I never realized the magnitude of (the scrutiny)… You don’t really understand until you go through it and deal with it.”  Manziel said no one knew what was coming in terms of media scrutiny, not him, not Kevin Sumlin and not the A&M athletic department.

*  He reiterated that he was simply tired at the Manning Passing Academy and that his departure had nothing to do with what happened the night before.

*  He said again that he was not asked to leave the camp.  Manziel called it a “mutual decision.”

*  Kevin Sumlin made it clear less than an hour ago that his “discussion” with Manziel resulted in the QB dropping off the social media site.  Manziel was asked about why he hasn’t tweeted in a month and he sure didn’t mention any discussion with his head coach: “I guess I haven’t said anything lately because I really haven’t had anything interesting to say.”

*  Asked how he needs to change, Manziel said that “he’s continuing to learn.”

*  “Football is football,” and Manziel said his offseason activities won’t impact his play on the field this year.

Once again, Texas A&M’s quarterback seemed relaxed and self-assured while staring down a host of media members.  “I love talking to y’all.  There’s nothing wrong with this.  It’s just another day.”

The difference between the Manziel who sits down with the media and the Manziel who is his own worst enemy when it comes to offseason antics is enormous.  Manziel, today, has come across as he did all last season and at the Heisman Trophy presentation — as a young man fans can enjoy rooting for.

But who is the real Manziel?  The guy who handed multiple fake IDs to cops and tweeted that he “can’t wait to leave College Station” or the guy who’s focused on football and realizes that to some extent he’s brought a lot of this scrutiny on himself?

If it’s the latter, A&M might have another fantastic season.  If it’s the former, no one should be surprised if Manziel some how, some way creates an off-field distraction for himself and his team in the next few months.

I have a twenty year old son and am glad the media is not dissecting his every move and hanging upon every word he speaks or tweets.  He is a very successful student, but I am sure he has a good time, and probably does a few things that it is best I don't know about.  He is, after all, my son.  A twenty year old going out and oversleeping the next morning is news?  I think this is quite a tempest in a tea pot and is getting way more ink and air time than it deserves.  There are plenty of meaningful things going on at the media days and for this to be front and center is a tad bit on the absurd side.  When "Joe Willie" missed the Sugar Bowl that was news.  "Johnny Football" missing summer camp is not even a sidebar.

Do you really think other college players are sitting around in the off-season trying to figure out how other teams might play against them?  I don't think Manziel's statement on defenses is worrisome in the least.

As for the Manning Camp discussion, here is something that the media hasn't addressed, or at least I haven't seen it.  He was out w/ the Mannings and AJ the night before.  And, if he was hungover from the day before, who was he out getting drunk with?  And, lastly, as has widely been acknowledged, everyone with a cell phone is now a photographer/journalist.  You have arguably the most talked about "celebrity" ever in college football in the news almost daily.  If he were out getting wasted the night before, where are all of the pictures of him getting drunk?  Surely there has to be some?

Yes, I really do think there are players who spend their offseason focusing on improving their game which includes understanding how other teams might attack them.

As for your second point, there have been photos of him out at a bar in Thibodaux, Louisiana last Friday.

@John at MrSEC @j_scott_o Also, regarding these pictures at the bar in Louisiana, I think you should have mentioned that the pictures also have Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and AJ McCarron with him as well.  So, you statement about the pictures is either not relevant to the types of pictures I was alluding or was just misleading.  But, I'll run with your statement on the pictures.  Since Peyton, Eli, and AJ are all in the pictures, at the bar...who bought Manziel the drinks?  I mean, if he was at the bar, the assumption being made is he was drinking.  Surely those 3 guys know he is  underage.  I mean, he's stated he is only 20 years old.  And, if they did not buy the alcohol for him, shouldn't the bar be in trouble?  And, did these 3 individuals not have a problem with associating with an underage drinker in their party?  I don't think they are his guardians or parents, so, shouldn't those questions be asked?

@John at MrSEC @Jerry Mathers @j_scott_o Let me be clear, I have NO problem with the media "picking on my team".  And, you'll never see me ask "why are you picking on my team".  I don't want this to be a 'rah-rah, go Aggies' site, that is why I come here.  But, at the same time, I feel like I should be able to ask questions.  They don't have to be answered, but, you have a comments section, so, I take advantage of it.  Seriously though, you do a great job with your site and I enjoy it.

Nope, just tired of trying to cover all this and answer nothing but "why are you picking on my team" comments.  Also, not sure how "life's too short" is a tantrum.

But, do you use your real name much?

Thanks for visiting,

John

@John at MrSEC @j_scott_o Wow.  That response was unexpected.  I've said in many, many, many posts in the past how I love your site.  It is a daily stop.  I will continue to read it on daily basis.  But, I will make sure I don't say anything negative in the least.  I do appreciate your responses.  And, I know you are covering SEC Media Days.  Sorry if you got offended or something, but, wow, really wasn't expecting this type of response.

I'm trying to cover Media Days and be kind enough to answer your questions/comments on the fly.

I won't bother again.

You're right, the world is wrong.  Manziel's an angel and the media are meanies.  And I spent 2 hours carefully looking at the wording of your comment before spending another 2 hours carefully scripting my response.

Don't like the site, don't visit.  Life's too short.

@John at MrSEC @j_scott_o Pictures of him getting wasted?  Seems like those would be all over ESPN and other sports sites if that were true.  Don't think there is any smoking gun, and that is what I was referring.  Like you, I chose my words carefully.  Pictures of being in a bar is not condemning of anything.  Having pictures of him getting wasted/hammered would speak a 1000 words.

As for "improving their game", that isn't what is in question.  Herbstreit even visited w/ Manziel during some of his training.  As for "includes understanding how other teams might attack them"...I'd be surprised if college players in the off-season are just sitting around trying to figure out how other teams will attack them.  In the off-season, it is going to be a lot more about improving yourself.  Once you get in camp, then you start analyzing other teams with the coaches' help.  The coaches are the ones who have been analyzing/scheming all off-season.
