“We do want to play up-tempo but I think in order to play great defense sometimes you have to protect your defense,” Jones said. “If that means slowing the tempo down we’ll be able to do that. Like we tell our players it’s easy to speed up. If you practice speeding up it’s very easy now when you slow down. So we’ll mix the tempos, but we want to be up-tempo.”
Jones went on to say Tennessee will be a physical, up-tempo team — shades of Gus Malzahn’s plan at Auburn? — and will focus on running the ball first.
