If you’re a social media fan you’ve probably already seen numerous posts claiming that senior-to-be Tennessee point guard Trae Golden will not be back with the Volunteers next season. Now it’s official according to head coach Counzo Martin, who confirmed the news to The Knoxville News Sentinel.
Golden was expected to help a revamped Tennessee lineup — featuring a back-from-injury Jeronne Maymon and five-star incoming freshman Robert Hubbs — return to the NCAA Tournament after a two-year absence. Now, he’s done with the issue rumored to involve academics.
The timing is surprising as Martin got down to the 13-man scholarship limit by cutting loose committed Vol prospect Travon Landry over the weekend. Landry plays the point guard position.
Unless Tennessee finds a juco point guard at this last date or a last-minute transfer from elsewhere, Martin will enter a potential make-or-break third year in Knoxville with only converted two-guards or true freshmen to run the point for his squad.
Golden averaged 12.1 points per game last season.
