Johnny Manziel led Texas A&M to an upset win at eventual BCS champ Alabama last season. He also won over Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban with his play in that game and others. Asked about Johnny Football yesterday, Saban said:
“A fantastic player is a fantastic player. We thought he was a fantastic player last year and we really tried to prepare for him. But he has such a good instinctive feel for scrambling and making plays and ad libbing and making something happen when there’s nothing there. That’s kind of hard to prepare for…
I’m not sure you stop a guy like that, but to keep him from making big plays and allowing him to break down the defense, that’s something we’re going to have to continue to work on and do a better job of.”
Manziel was 24-of-31 passing against the Tide in Tuscaloosa last year. He threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He also ran 18 times for 92 yards in the Aggies’ 29-24 win.
Alabama will visit College Station on September 14th in a game already scheduled to air on CBS.
