A&M’s Kyle Field To Be The Biggest Stadium In The SEC (And Texas)

new-kyle-field-drawingIt’s official.  Texas A&M announced yesterday that the school would push forward with a $450 million refurbishment and redevelopment plan for Kyle Field.  When the expansion is complete, the biggest football stadium in the SEC and in the state of Texas will stand in College Station.  Planned seating capacity — 102,500.

The Houston Chronicle quotes a “grinning” A&M chancellor John Sharp as saying:

“It’s the largest?  I didn’t know that.  That was the recommendation of the architect: 102,500… I didn’t argue with that recommendation…

We don’t follow other folk anymore.  We kind of do our own thing.”

Seat licenses are part of the plan to fund the project.  The goal is to wrap up work by August of 2015 with the Aggies never having to leave their home stadium during the construction process (which will begin after this season).  That work will include a new facade, exterior plazas, loge boxes, luxury suites, a premium club that will run the length of the field, a rebuilt west side of the stadium, and a three-deck end zone in the stadium’s south end.  The field will be lowered and fans will be moved closer to the action.  Canopies will also be added on the east and west sides of the stadium to trap noise.

Renderings of the project can be found right here.

“Kyle Field is a megaphone to the world, whether you like it or not,” Sharp said.  “And this megaphone that we’re fixing to build is going to be the loudest on the planet.”

After so many predicted mediocrity for Texas A&M in the SEC, the Aggies must feel like they’re now doling out the world’s largest serving of crow (and we’re not talking about John David).  An 11-win season, a Heisman Trophy, and now a rebuilt Kyle Field that even surpasses good ol’ Texas’ stadium over in Austin.

Howdy, indeed.

lol it won't bode well with texas.  give it a few years and they'll be up to 103,000.  when A&M built The Zone in '99, surpassing DKR at the time, texas added on.  When A&M built the 12th man TV (at the the time the largest video board in the world), Texas added one of their own that was exactly 1 square-foot bigger.  I have no interest in being "the biggest", but it will be amusing to see how Texas responds.

How many SEC A.D.'s just called their architect?  And school president?  And boosters?  I know there are already a couple who have expansion plans, but to let the new kid on the block have the biggest, shiniest, newest toy will not sit will with a lot of the SEC old timers.

@alamoaggie08 I'm not sure that is the issue any more. College Station is going to have a problem in the short term figuring out how to handle the 8,000 or so extra hotel rooms needed to handle the 16-20,000 people.  That said, I've watched the promo video, and it is apparent the vision is not to be the biggest, its to be the most imposing for recruits and big pocket donors. I've been to Texas's Memorial (or Royal) stadium, and its well maintained, but its just a stadium, much like the Swamp at UF is. Both of those are imposing, but they do not project the "center of the universe" feel Kyle looks like it wants to project, with a planned neighborhood (parks, purpose built tailgating, museum, food courts, etc). So, if Texas decides to increase its size to 103,000, not sure that will do anything for recruiting. Kyle is a quantum leap for A&M (and the SEC in a sort of tangental way), and anything less than a major league expenditure of funds to upgrade their stadium won't do it in the keeping up with the Jones' department for Texas, or the rest of us. No university in the nation right now could justify that kind of expenditure. I do not think we will see this kind of expenditure at the collegiate level on facility upgrades for the next decade, or more.
