UGA’s Richt Talks 16th Team, 9th Game

gfx - they said itMark Richt was asked at the Touchdown Club of Athens about the possibility of the SEC expanding its in-league slate to nine games.  In answering, he brought up expansion of another kind:

“I wouldn’t be shocked to see the teams go to 16 one day.  I’m not hearing any rumors.  Don’t start any kind of, ‘Coach Richt said this,’ but I wouldn’t be shocked to one day see us go to 16.  If we go to 16, I can’t imagine us not going to less than nine games.  I think we would have to go to nine…

These other schools (who have their biggest rivals inside the SEC) have nine but they’re not going to have that 10th game that is a team that is BCS-quality or ACC-quality or whatever you want to say.  I wouldn’t be shocked to see that happen.  I voted against it because if we have nine, plus (Georgia) Tech and then if we want to do something like Clemson like we did this year, you’re talking about 11 out of 12 games that are pretty stout.”

Georgia ends every season against Georgia Tech, just as South Carolina plays Clemson and Florida plays Florida State.  Kentucky also has an annual out-of-conference rivalry with Louisville.

Sounds like Coach Richt is saying (without saying) what the fans have been discussing for quite a while now = 14 ain't working.

@  4X4 pods, you would need 9 games:  3 against pod mates, 4 against paired pod, 1 each from pods 3 & 4.  This allows you to go H/H with everybody every 6 years + keep rivaled games (UGA/AU, UT/UA, etc.....).  The only trouble with that is how do you determine who are the last 2 teams from the other side?  There has been talk about 1 perm. rival from each pod - which would have a balanced schedule to last until more expansion.  HOWEVER, the whole "you play X while we play Y" debate will continue.....along with Strength of Schedule.

For the years you have 5 home games, your in-state rival (or whomever that is) would host you.  When you have 4 home games, you host the in-state rival.  This setup guarantees 5H/5A games every year.

However, he does have an argument about UGA/UF/USC/UK being only free for 1 (possibly 2) slots for any other kind of game.

I still would like to see each conference have 16 teams & every 2 years pair up 2 of those conferences for 1 game (H/H).  Then rotate to another conference for 2 yrs..  That way EVERYBODY will play EVERYBODY & avoid the "they only schedule cupcakes" angle.

&, for the SEC CG, the teams with the best record of each of the 2 sides will meet.  It's the easiest way to figure out.  &, with an odd # conf. games, there's literally no tie because one team would have beaten the other team during the season.
