New Texas Tech Coach Kingsbury “Was Never An Aggie”

gfx - they said itWhen Tommy Tuberville surprised everyone by jumping the first train from Lubbock to Cincinnati last December, Texas Tech officials turned to one of their own when searching for a new head coach.  Kliff Kingsbury played at Tech under Mike Leach.  He still ranks near the top of all the Red Raider passing categories — yards, touchdowns, completions.  And now he’s being hailed as the savior of Texas Tech football.

Kingsbury had spent the previous five seasons working under Kevin Sumlin, first at Houston and then, last season, at Texas A&M.  In College Station he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, tutoring some fella named Johnny Manziel.

But Kingsbury’s new boss — Tech AD Kirby Hocutt — wants everyone to know where his new coach’s heart has always remained, telling

“Kliff was never an Aggie.  Ask him.”

Sounds like a little playful gig, but you can be sure some out there have taken offense.

Hocutt went on to say that Tech would “love to play A&M in every sport (but) nothing is in conversation right now.”  Asked why the schools aren’t talking, he added: “You’re not going to bait me there.  Hopefully someday those conversations can begin.”

One suspects Kingsbury would have no problem facing Texas A&M.  After all, he was never an Aggie.  Just ask him.

When A&M bolted, more than a few teams in the Big XII made a very public, and very coordinated, set of statements about not playing A&M any time soon. Don't know if Tech was among them, but a quick search of Aggie blogs shows the two most hated teams (for Aggies) in the Big XII were Texas and Tech. Texas is hated, because duh, its in Aggie DNA to hate them. But most Ags seem to be raring to get at them again on the field. Texas would have to come crawling (most Ags seem to think that would be appropriate), but the Ags would have a go at them, and relish it.

Ags however, seem to dislike intensely Techg fans at a whole different level, and examples of the things they go on and on about start with Red Raiders crashing yell practices (which are attended by dates, kids, etc) and throwing batteries, bottles, etc. The Ags have a list of places they will not take their mascot, a tame sort of mild mannered 40 pound relative of Lassie. Lubbock seems to be number one on that list of places full of people who would harm a collie, so the dog does not go to any sporting events in Tech territory.

That, coupled with Tech being a school that can be a spoiler, the small size of their stadium, the long drive from College Station, A&M's focus on making a run for a BCS or national title qualifying game in the near future, etc, etc, etc, would seem to indicate A&M's silence on Tech's public teasings means they really are not interested.

My vote is for A&M to schedule a team from California or Washington. Somebody with a real spread offense. SEC spread against Pac 12 spread would be fun. About a million points in the first half would be a break from Alabama vs LSU.

Actually, Kingsbury has publicly stated he'd like to play A&M after Manziel leaves.

As to A&M playing most sports Tech isn't all that good, and A&M can find better opponents in Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, or even Waco.  Those cities are all closer for travel purposes & home to more A&M fans than distant Lubbock.  I wouldn't be opposed to playing Tech in most sports, but I'd want something a little better than a straight home/home deal...maybe 3 games in College State for 2 games in Lubbock.

1.  Tech is taking unofficial orders from the Big 12/UT (same thing?) to blackball TAMU, which, from Tech's perspective, is like Memphis blackballing Tennessee (similar driving distances and overall brand quality within the state, it seems).  I do not see any logical benefit to Tech simply not wanting to play TAMU based on their geography.  TAMU is relatively close from Tech's perspective, but Tech is not that close from TAMU's perspective considering what TAMU can get by going east.  I know most of these teams fly anyway, but if you're getting on a plane, you might as well fly to a peer institution.

2.  TAMU simply does not want to play Tech.  The state of Texas could be it's own country based on size and culture, and the schools are over 6 hours apart to drive.  It is not like they are both on Tobacco Road.

I understand why he would not directly answer the question.  Neither answer works well for Tech's image.

@BonzaiB i don't recall much before that, but i think mike leach is part of what made the a&m-tech rivalry so intense (in a bad way).  he's the mark cuban of college footnall: trash talk, crazy behavior, etc and it definitely rubbed off onto his fans.  tech fans are known for poor behaviorl ike throwing bottles and batteries at A&M fans and the band and booing (or chearing) injured players.  they also injured several fans when they threw the goal post into the stands in 2001 (or something like that).

they kind of settled down a little when leach was fired.  i've always believed his firing had something to do with the image he had laid upon that school as much as anything, and craig smith's little brat gave them the opportunity to fire him that they'd been waiting for.

@BonzaiB They seriously mess with a live mascot?  That is cowardly, especially when it is a docile animal like a collie.  I don't blame TAMU for wanting to leave them be on an island out there.

@m_Ag What a joke.  Tech consistently beat an overrateed underachieving  TAMU throughout the mid 90's to late 2000's.  It wasn't even close in football for almost a 20 year period.  You either do not pay attention or you are a pathetic 2%'er either way you are full of BS

@KellyJones2 Why not for the last 25 years TAMU was an easy Tech victory.  Granted with TAMU's poor performance in the last several decades beating that overrated dog would not help our image.  That is true

@KellyJones2 from what i've read they've had conversation in the past, but what A&M is trying to avoid getting into a long term contract with them to keep a slot open for the texas rivalry (despite what old DeLoser says, that rivalry will resume probably sooner than people think).  i can see A&M and techmayber agreeing to one home-home series or a game at a neutral site, but that's about it.

@KellyJones2 @BonzaiB Thats the word I got when I was scheduling a visit to A&M a little over a year ago. I wanted to see the yell leaders, etc, so I called the office that supports the yell leaders (yeah, the Aggies have a whole staff of folks who coordinate public appearances for the yell leaders, their travel, etc). Anyway, I asked the woman who schedules their events, and there were a couple going on, and she mentioned Reveille would be at one of them. Asked her about the dog, and she gave me a wonderful half hour history, the personalities of the different dogs. I was blown away. All I wanted was a date and time, but she found out I was from UF, and it was like we had been pals for life. I asked if the dog went to all their games, and she said very firmly, "No." And then explained that Lubbock was strickly prohibited (she did not mention any others, but I assumed there were). Interestingly, Austin was not mentioned. Apparently, the Longhorns and the Ags can agree on something.
