A&M’s Manziel Trades Twitter For Instagram

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel recently gave up on Twitter because he said it had become a distraction for him.  He was tired of having whatever he wrote or shared via that social medium become newsworthy.

So the Heisman-winning quarterback has now shifted to Instagram instead.  Yeah.  That’ll be much better.

Manziel attended the Miami Heat’s victory at the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.  And he tweete… er… Instragrammed a photo of himself with LeBron James afterward:

johnny-manziel-lebron-james

Now, there’s nothing in the world wrong with a college kid going to an NBA game.  There’s nothing wrong with a celeb-athlete getting “backstage” with one of the world’s most famous players.  And there’s nothing wrong with Manziel showing the world the cool, fun things he gets to do.

Most 20-somethings would show off photos like the one above.

But Manziel needs to just shut up about the press and the distractions.  Sorry if that’s harsh, but he creates the distractions his own self.  Example: Post a photo of yourself with an NBA star and expect people to ask…

A) Why isn’t he worrying about spring practice?

And…

B) How does this kid have the money to attend (seemingly) every big concert or sporting event in the nation?

Yeah, yeah.  We know.  Mama and papa have money.  But not everyone knows that.

Manziel is taking advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  I say opportunity because most people only dreams of hanging with the rich and famous.  I say once-in-a-lifetime because Heisman voters tend to turn on those who receive too much hype.  Tim Tebow never won the award after his sophomore season.  Peyton Manning never won it at all.  Get too much pub, and people will start looking for a new underdog on the ballot.  Regardless of the season he has this fall, Manziel won’t win the trophy again.  Fair or not, there are going to be a lot of people who say success has gone to the kid’s head.

But what should be a greater concern for Manziel — and the coaches and parents who apparently aren’t worried that he’s setting himself up for a fall — is how Aggie fans respond to his “celebrified” ways.  A&M fans are backing him now, but let’s see what gets said after the Aggies lose their first game this fall.  And Lord help the kid if he takes a step backward in his overall play. Just as sure as him not winning another Heisman?  The fact that fans will say, “Maybe if he worried more about football,” whenever he fires an interception or fails to find an open receiver.

Manziel deserves the right to enjoy his youth.  In a perfect world he should be able to share tales and photos of his dazzling adventures.

But this isn’t a perfect world.  And everytime the kid tweets, Instagrams, or Facebooks a photo of himself eating a ham sandwich, it leaves a few more people wondering which the kid loves more — football or his celeb status?

Especially if he’s eating said ham sandwich with Justin Bieber and Pope Francis backstage at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

i have pictures of me with David Robinson, Bruce Bowen, Avery Johnson and Malik Rose.  I'll be sure not to post them anywhere or I might get misinterpreted.

I can't even begin to address the leaps of logic contained within this piece, so I'll just go with one:

"Post a photo of yourself with an NBA star and expect people to ask…     A) Why isn’t worrying about spring practice?"

Expect? I'm not sure what kind of "people" you hang out with, but most of the people I know can differentiate between what one does on a Saturday evening and what one does on work/school days. By your reasoning (called loosely), I should never take my wife to dinner or catch that first showing of Batman 14 on a weekend for fear that my boss might get wind of it and know how distracted I am from filing that section report the following Wednesday.

To take it further, Manziel should not only abstain from non-football activities on Fri. evening, Sat., and Sun., but he should be "worrying" about the practices he attended the week before.

Okay. If you say so.

I am cool with JFF partying like a Rock Star.  He works long hours for Texas A&M and doesn't get paid for it.

Just don't complain about how you can't walk across campus.  Mad football skills and endless self promotion have created the world you live in.

The articles written about Manziel are starting to get stale. Each one references twitter, instagram, parties or sporting events and then wonders why he doesn't just "shut up" or go live in a cave. As if he is forcing college football media to re-hash the same article over and over.

The media needs to come with a new take. Someone should write an investigative article about how he gets his money (anything shady?) or try discussing his NFL prospects with some GMs. Churning out an article each time he picks his nose and then getting self righteous about it is getting a little silly.

" And everytime the kid tweets, Instagrams, or Facebooks a photo of himself eating a ham sandwich, it leaves a few more people wondering which the kid loves more — football or his celeb status?"

Which is their problem, not Manziel's. As long as he keeps showing up for all team duties and continues to show as much leadership as he has so far in spring practice, no one can legitimately claim such an idiotic thing. But let them if they must.

Your social media posting skills aren't in question... but your reading skills are.

Let me spell this out for the 1000th time.

If I post pictures of myself online in a Nazi uniform, I can't complain that people "are always picking on me about being a Nazi."

If you post photos of yourself with all those NBA players, you can't complain if people say, "What kind of NBA fetish has this person got?"

And if Manziel posts photos of himself wakeboarding with Paris Hilton, skydiving with Shaquille O'Neal, or handing out Oscars with Jack Nicholson... he can't whine that people are picking on him for being a celebrity.  He's literally asking for it.

That has nothing to do with what's fair or not -- it's not, he has the right to enjoy the experience just AS I WROTE in the piece -- but the REALITY is that every time he tweets a photo of himself hanging with Brangelina, it's going to be news.  And if he doesn't play well this fall, it'll be thrown back in his face.

Anyone who does not understand what I've just written, is beyond help.

He has the right to do whatever he likes.

The point is he needs to stop complaining about the coverage of what he does if he does it and then posts it to Twitter or Instagram.

In case you can't follow that, let me use hyperbole to try and make my point even clearer: It's my right to post racist or sexist comments on Twitter.  But It would be ridiculous for me to complain about the reaction I would get if I did that.

Oh, well.  If you point out that the kid is making his own bed, you're suddenly dumped in with the people who are complaining about him.  Pointing out how he prevent the complaints in the first place is apparently viewed as a complaint by some Aggie fans.

@NewtonCrew He didn't complain about walking across campus. He was, once again, misrepresented by the media about what he meant. Here you go:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xdt92_LGeC0

He doesn't walk across campus because none of his classes are "over there". Seems like a very logical reason. Go to the area where you have class. Don't go to the area where you don't have class.  Worked for me when I was in college.

@John at MrSEC @jmouton11 John, looking at what you replied to, I think the point of Mouton's post flew right past your head. I, too, wonder why the weekend activities of any player, especially such shocking and ill-advised activities as attending a basketball game, would prove that said player was blowing off (not worrying about) spring practice? You went off on a completely different direction. I'd be interested in the answer to that question from your perspective. Why WOULD sitting in great seats at a basketball game on the weekend and posing for a photo afterwards be interpreted as some sort of disinterest in that person's endeavors on the field during the week?

@jmouton11 @Bigfoot in Aggieland Me, too. I have never once been over on the south side of campus, where his classes are held, except to go in and out of Kyle Field. My classes are all near University Drive, so I park, go to class, and leave from that part of campus. People don't realize how huge our campus is. I'd get lost if I wandered off my usual path. I am as unlikely to be in the area where Manziel goes every day as he is to be hanging out where I go daily. I doubt if I'll ever run into him, unless I go to the rec building, where he sometimes spends his evenings. I understand his reasoning perfectly.

@John at MrSEC@alamoaggie08@jmouton11

@John at MrSEC @alamoaggie08 @jmouton11 John, you rail against everyone here, claiming they/we are missing your point. Trouble is, the point you are stressing (Manziel should quit complaining so much ) isn't valid. As noted in several recent interviews, a part of which is linked in a comment on this page:

-in spite of how it was reported after the Davey O'Brien awards, Manziel did NOT say he was forced to take online classes because he was being mobbed by other students. He tries to clarify that in the video by explaining why it was more convenient for him this semester. Granted, he isn't the most eloquent 20 year old I've ever heard, but I do get what he's saying about that and the fact that this is how the classes worked out for him this semester. It is you and others like you who has labeled that as "complaining".

-What you characterize as constant complaining,  I see as a guy being ASKED in interviews about how his "fame" has affected his day to day life.  I'm guessing you would rather he either refuse to answer that question (for which he would be criticized) or answer the question with a lie. If he's asked, he's going to answer. To most of us, that doesn't constitute complaining.

-You mention, ad nauseum, the "don't post it" option. If you have paid any attention at all, you'd know that 85% of the photos and information about where he is and what he's doing has been posted by OTHERS, often without his prior knowledge. He posted ONE photo from spring break. The rest came from others and were plastered all over gossip media. Even many things that ended up on his Instagram and were jawed about were simple REposts by him. The photos had already been seen and commented on by other people. (Examples: Rick Ross pic. was posted by a fan of Ross the week of the BCS championship in early Jan. Manziel didn't repost it to his Instagram until over a month later. It was already "out there" getting all that attention you claim he hates, all without his help.) The same is true of a number of other 'controversial' pictures, such as his sitting courtside. He has no control over networks or newshounds taking picts. or scavenging Twitter/IG to fuel their stories. Maybe he should just stay inside his house until next fall.

This is a point that is made in several comments on this article, but you are the one that doesn't seem to understand what we are saying. I follow him on Twitter, Instagram. I have not seen this penchant for complaining you are so adamant about. The only time I've seen him reference how fame has affected him is WHEN HE IS ASKED. And as often as not, when he is asked about anything, the followup reports often misquote or mis-characterize his answers.

Did you bother to read what I wrote?  I said people -- like the guy you linked to -- will continue to hound Manziel as long as he posts photos of himself doing the celeb thing on social media.

Why is that so hard for Texas A&M fans to understand?

I'm NOT criticizing your quarterback.  I'm stating the fact that he needs to either a) shut up about distractions and media coverage or b) stop posting stuff on social media.

Could I possibly make that any clearer?
