Writer: Texas’ Dodds Needs To Let Go Of Aggie-phobia

gfx - they said itRandy Galloway of The Fort Wort Star-Telegram is the latest journalist to kick Texas AD DeLoss Dodds around for his latest comments regarding Texas A&M.  Earlier this week Dodds said that it was A&M that scuttled the Longhorns/Aggies rivalry, that it would only be re-started under Texas’ rules, and that Longhorn fans don’t even care about playing their most hated rival any longer.

That’s all nonsense, of course, and everyone outside of those in burnt orange knows it.

That’s why Galloway believes it’s time for Dodds to get over his Aggie-phobia:

“Well, first, not once as the Aggies were departing the Big 12 did anyone in College Station say the rivalry with UT was over. It was just the opposite. School officials repeatedly said, with the move to the SEC, A&M wanted to continue the game, and if it could no longer happen at Thanksgiving, pick another date.

Second, if DeLoss is actually listening to his fan base, I’d like to know what his poll says on Mack Brown continuing as head coach.

But these are tough times for Dodds. Shockingly, the Aggies became the national talk of college football in their first SEC season. The Longhorns, after the last couple of seasons, just hope they are still talked about in Austin.

Based on current conditions, DeLoss should have a wet finger in the air, and be playing the wind. If he doesn’t want to play A&M again, a much more diplomatic answer to the question would come across better.

DeLoss had the PR hammer as the Aggies departed. In a one-eighty, the Aggies now have the hammer.

The rivalry, at some point — probably after DeLoss retires — will continue. It should continue. Everyone knows that.”

Galloway also did a little recon on other Texas-based schools that used to play A&M to see who’d be interested in scheduling them again.  Texas Tech and TCU are both in favor of playing the Aggies.  Baylor — which threatened lawsuits in an attempt to block A&M’s move to the SEC — shows no interest.

But if given the opportunity to fire up some old rivalries, here’s guessing the Bears would rank behind the Longhorns, Red Raiders and Horned Frogs on most Aggie fans’ lists.

Texas is just pissed because someone told them no and wouldn't be their punching bag.  Oklahoma is still playing an abused "house wife" role.  Texas and Texas A&M is a game that belongs to the whole State of Texas and Texas will have to come crawling back at some point.  Texas is always greedy (which isn't totally bad) and already knows that not playing A&M is hurting their program.  Too much money and visibility to pass up long term!

By the way, I love that BEVO was named because the Aggies branded "13 - 10" on the side of their cow and they touched up the branding some more to make it BEVO!  Hilarious that their mascot steer got its name BEVO from the Aggies!  I am gonna go eat a nice juicy steak now!

Thanks for pointing me to this John. Gotta tell you, while this is not as much fun as watching a good bru-ha between Auburn and Alabama, or being part of one with Georgia, this is tooooooooo good to pass up. Getting the Ags in the SEC is starting to pay HUGE dividends for us as fans. None of us have enough baggage with the Ags to actually hate 'em (in the SEC way) yet, but while we wait for all that to happen, we get to see them lock horns (pun intended) with jerks who do not know that when you are in a hole and want to get out, the first thing you do is STOP DIGGING. And right now the Ag leadership are making these dolts look idiotic without saying a word, a lot of other folks in Texas are starting to point out that the emperor has no clothes.

No offense Horns, but Dodds is making you all look...... well read the article.

Oh man, the best thing for a crowd of SEC football fanatics already on pins and needles for 2013 to start, looking for anything to have fun with, is to either have Spurrier start talking about Georgia or ......... this!

go easy on him.  its got to be a shock, having to admit that you're not as special or as desirable as you thought you were.

no one needs baylor.  the only reason they're even in a top tier league is because the governor at the time of the big 12's formation, who not-so-coincidentally was baylor grad, forced them into the conference with state legislation while leaving schools like TCU out.  quite frankly they never even played like a div 1 school until RG3 came along.

@alamoaggie08Although I do agree with you for the most part on Baylor getting in thanks to Ann Richards (and Grant Teaff), it isn't exactly factual about saying Baylor never played like a Div 1 team.  Back in the 80s, Baylor fielded some good teams and was ranked a few times.

Going back to the politics though, Houston was the team that really got screwed.  And, TCU, ironically, was the team that really benefitted.  They were one of the bottom feeders of the SWC, but, after being shunned by the Big12 merger, they ended up playing much lesser competition...and winning.  This led to better recruits and an upgade in their program.  Now, it will be interesting to see how they do in the Big12 against better competition.

it's true that all teams have had their time in the light, heck Tulane was once the team to beat.  the main point (which i can tell you understand) is most of the small schools from the SWC that got left behind by the Big 12 had more of those times than baylor.  it took them 15 yrs just to be relevent again.  Houston, TCU and SMU (had they not screwed themselves over five years prior) were overall more successful and deserving than Baylor.  baylor got in by shear politics, and it has only barely started to pay off.  at this point RG3 (and Art Briles to a much lesser extent) is their saving grace.

you're right that TCU ended up with the advantage.  all those years in the lesser conferences built their confidence and recruiting base.  i think they'll be fine in the big 12. it's really hard to judge them right now when they played almost the entire season without an experienced QB.   they definitely have the defense to stay allive, but in the big 12 you also need the offense.  if they can get their offense clicking again this year, it will be a great opportunity to make a statement with OU seemingly headed into a "down" year and texas having yet to show they're for real.  i'll be rooting for TCU partly because i'd love them to crash the big 12, and because my mom is a horned frog and she's been very tolerant of my dad and me with all our aggie-antics ;-)

@alamoaggie08 I agree about Baylor.  They won a couple of games in two decades.  You can't blame them for not wanting to play us.

I hope that all of this Tech talk is untrue.  I do not ever want to go to Lubbock.
