SEC Hoops Roundup: Bubble Teams Deliver As Kentucky, Tennessee Rally, Ole Miss Wins, Bama Buzzer-Beater

1. Kentucky scores last 11 points of the game to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.  UK freshman Archie Goodwin: “I think we’re in. I don’t know what those committee guys are thinking about, but they better put us in there.”

2. Up 57-50 with 7:36 to go, Florida never scores again.  Coach Billy Donovan: “You’ve got to be able to make a shot.”

Ole Miss 81, LSU 67. Video Highlights

3. With the victory, the Rebels clinch a double-bye in the SEC Tournament.  Marshall Henderson and Murphy Holloway combine for 38 points.

4. Loss drops LSU to the No. 9 seed in conference tournament.  LSU’s Andre Stringer led the Tigers with 18 points. “They just came to play. We thought we were going to come to this game and play hard, but they played harder than us.”

Vanderbilt 74, South Carolina 64. Video Highlights

5. Improving Vanderbilt gets their sixth win in last nine games.  Rod Odom and Dai-Jon Parker each scored 18 points.

6. South Carolina coach Frank Martin: “A lot of credit to coach Stallings and those kids. I enjoy watching their team because they play it the right way.”

Arkansas 73, Texas A&M 62. Video Highlights

7. Arkansas has five players in double figures as Razorbacks bounce back from loss at Missouri.  Underclassmen Marshawn Powell and BJ Young don’t start game, get “one more year” chants from student section.

8. After injuring his wrist and finger against LSU, Elston Turner doesn’t play for Aggies.  Coach Billy Kennedy: ”I thought once we settled into it, we got good production. We had our opportunities.”

Alabama 61, Georgia 58. Video Highlights

9. Tied at 58, Alabama guard Trevor Releford connects on a buzzer-beater just beyond midcourt: “I knew it was on target but I thought it was going to be a little short.”

10. Georgia battles back from 14-point halftime deficit only to fall short.  Coach Mark Fox: “I thought we were going to win the game and then we ended up losing. How’s that feel? Not very good.”

Tennessee 64, Missouri 62. Video Highlights

12. Vols go on late 16-4 run to put the Tigers away.  UT senior guard Skyler McBee: “At the end of the season, a lot of it’s about heart and the will to win. We have that right now.”

13. For the sixth time this year, Tigers lose on opponents court in either overtime or three points or less. Second in the country in rebounding entering the game, Missouri outrebounded by Tennessee 45-32.

14. Tennessee, along with Kentucky, two of Saturday’s biggest bubble winners.

Mississippi State 74, Auburn 71 (OT). Video Highlights

15. In a battle for the cellar of the SEC, Mississippi State gets the victory.  Coach Rick Ray: “You get a chance to read some things and people are talking about we’re the worst team ever in SEC history, so I guess we can’t be that if we finish 13th out of 14th.”

16. Auburn drops it 15th game in 16 tries – now 12-38 in three years of SEC play under coach Tony Barbee. Worried about job security? “No. Not at all.”
