Michigan Star And Carolina DE Clowney Earn Each Other’s Respect

gfx - they said itYesterday’s Outback Bowl featured a head-to-head matchup of two future first-round draft picks: Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan and South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney.  Each had his share of successes on the day.  And according to Lewan, each earned the respect of the other:

“It’s one of those things where he and I earned respect for each other.  I said, ‘You’re the best defensive end I’ve ever played against.’  He looked right back in my eyes and said, ‘You’re the best tackle I’ve ever played against.’”

According to The Charleston Post & Courier, the two players shook hands as Lewan briefly left the field with cramps in the third quarter.

While Taylor won most of the head-to-head matchups on the day, Clowney recorded the highlight play of the day with a game-changing, helmet-crushing, fumble-causing hit on Michigan running back Vincent Smith.

That was the greatest hit I've ever seen in college football because: 1) 'Cocks were totally jobbed on the 1st down call for UM 2) It was simply the most explosive hit and caused a fumble 3) Which Clowney recovered I came out of my recliner and whooped and hollered so loudly my wife yelled from downstairs if I was alright,,,"hell yes" I was pumped. The following play resulting in a TD was simply karma!!!

Not quite on topic but since this was played simultaneously with the Capital One Bowl, I've only seen highlights. What was the deal with that ref calling the first down when the ball was obviously at least an inch or more short of the marker? I'm not one to go for conspiracy theories but that guy looks like he was on the take with that call. Did they address this during the game in any significant way? Great play by Clowney following that call.

I'll go ahead & ask this.....judging from that video clip provided, was that a good legal hit (or is it another "let's review it some more")?

&, I'm just going by THIS CLIP alone - since that's the only 1've I seen.

A running back isn't considered a defenseless player.

I was just going by the actions & location of the hit.  Not to ignore the helmet flying off either.

seconds ago.  If we had a slow-mo replay or another angle, it couldn't hurt.

You weren't.

I know that hitting/tackling was being focused on in 2012, so I was curious as to where that play fell on the spectrum.

The reason, mostly, is due to how the helmet flew off & seemed to land several yards behind the play instead of nearby.

Didn't mean for that to sound argumentative on my part, if it did.  I was just trying to answer your question.

Again, thanks for reading,
