Well that was quick. Arkansas receivers coach George McDonald — hired by new coach Bret Bielema last month — will leave Fayetteville without ever coaching a game. McDonald is set to be named as the new offensive coordinator at Syracuse.
McDonald will have to pay the school $50,000 for breaking his contract and moving to another school before June 30, 2014. Bielema took McDonald’s move in stride (at least publicly):
“When you set out to assemble one of the top coaching staffs in the country, the group will consist of individuals who are highly respected and highly sought after. I have always tried to hire coaches who possess the qualities and ambition to move up in our profession.”
As one door closes, another one opens. With McDonald heading for Syracuse, former Razorback quarterback Barry Lunney, Jr. was hired yesterday as Bielema’s new tight ends coach. He has been the offensive coordinator at Bentonville High School in Arkansas since 2005.
