if dooley splits the next two games and is still employed come christmas, then its pretty obvious that the vols need an new athletic director as well as a head coach.
So much for those rumors of Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart giving Derek Dooley his walking papers yesterday afternoon. Not only was Hart watching a women’s soccer game in Knoxville when he was supposedly dropping the hammer on Dooley, but he actually gave the coach word — according to the coach himself — that no decision has been made yet.
“I didn’t ask him that, but I did ask him a lot of things. We talked very frankly about it. He told me he had not made a decision, whether we go 6-6, despite what all the reports are.
Either the sources are wrong, or Dave wasn’t being forthright with me, and I have no reason to think Dave’s not being forthright. He’s an honest man, he’s always been honest with me and I’ve appreciated how he’s handled everything about this. I really have.”
Tennessee’s coach is 4-18 in SEC play and he’s not likely to return next season. Attendance has waned at Neyland Stadium and keeping Dooley would mean taking a financial hit next season. Of course, buying Dooley out would also put the squeeze on an athletic department that lost cash last year.
Dooley said that he addressed the rumors with his team this morning:
“I’m not going to talk to you guys about what I tell the team. I think when you look at all this stuff… yeah, I addressed it. They’re getting banged up on their phone the way my kids were getting banged up and the way my wife was getting banged up.
Everybody said I was fired, and I didn’t even know it. I’m sitting there working on Vandy, and I’d already talked to Dave. You’ve got to come home and address all that with your family, and you’ve got to address it in the morning with the team.”
Everytime I get an email from someone claiming that newspapers and websites and other media outlets are irrelevant because now there’s Twitter!!!, I know:
1. The person emailing me in under 20
2. The person emailing is an idiot
3. The person emailing is both
But if you must follow Twitter religiously and believe whatever comes across it, you might want to follow our Twitter feed. Maxim Magazine and Athlon Sports have both singled it out as a “must follow” feed and we aren’t going to be throwing unsubstantiated rumors out there as so many did regarding Dooley yesterday.
If we can’t confirm a story with multiple proven sources, we’re not going to run with it. Whether everyone wants immediate 140-character bursts of micro-blabber or not.
