Nick Saban doesn’t like distractions. Knowing that, we’ll guess he’s not thrilled with this bit of news: Starting Alabama H-back Kelly Johnson and his fraternity have been named in federal lawsuit that accuses the player of assault at an off-campus party two years ago.
According to the personal injury suit filed last Friday, Logan Herring alleges that members of the Sigma Chi frat provided alcohol to underage attendees at a “pledge event” at Johnson’s home. According to The Birmingham News:
“Herring vomited on a couch at the party, then walked to a restroom, where he was knocked unconscious after he was kicked and punched in the head by an allegedly intoxicated Johnson, according to the suit. Herring’s head slammed against a wall as he was struck by Johnson while leaving the premises.
The suit claims Herring suffered a concussion and brain injury, memory loss, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. He transferred to another university.
The suit also alleges that members of the fraternity were aware that Johnson had assaulted another student at least once, including at least one other pledge.
Criminal charges were not filed against Johnson in relation to the alleged incident.”
The Birmingham-based attorney for Herring said the suit “was not filed sooner in hopes of potentially getting it resolved before it came to this.”
An alleged beating no laughing matter and we hope that the truth — whatever it is — comes out.
(What might be a laughing matter is what allegedly went on at a recent University of Tennessee frat house. You’d think they’d have used Rumple Minze.)
