Yet Another Suspension At UGA; So We’re Picking Bama And Carolina To Meet In Atlanta

Okay, we’ve seen enough.  There’s just too much offseason turbulence in Athens, Georgia for us to pick the Bulldogs to win the SEC East.  Yeah, we know all about the Dawgs “easy” schedule.  And we know that they are the heavy, consensus favorite to win their division.  But at the rate things are going, Mark Richt’s team will walk into its SEC opener at Missouri with about three scholarship players.  And that game — which so many SEC fans are just plopping down as a sure win for UGA — could wind up deciding the East Division.

Yesterday, we learned that projected starting right tackle Kolton Houton hasn’t been cleared by the NCAA due to a drug he took way back in high school that somehow still remains in his system two years later.  Then later in the day came news that starting outside linebacker Chase Vasser will miss the first two games of Georgia’s season — at home against Buffalo and then at Mizzou — due to a DUI charge he picked up in the Buckhead section of Atlanta back in May.  (On the bright side, at least Ray Lewis wasn’t involved.)

The sporting world will no doubt wonder why Richt can’t grab control of his program, but if this had happened at another school, Vasser may well just be looking at a one-quarter suspension.  Or he may be handed the ever-opaque “internal discipline.”  But UGA has a code of conduct that requires players to sit when they’ve been arrested.  The worse the crime, the longer the time on the pine.

So UGA will enter Columbia with holes at defensive back, linebacker, tailback, the offensive line, etc, etc.  Quarterback Aaron Murray and the team’s long-snapper are good to go, but there’s still plenty of time for that to change before the Dawgs open their season.

South Carolina fans seem to be chalking up their own game with LSU as a loss while Steve Spurrier seems to figure UGA will gain an advantage with a likely win against Ole Miss.  Well, a depleted UGA team going into a bonkers Faurot Field for Missouri’s first-ever SEC game could even the two East rivals in the loss column.  If so, that would still leave the Georgia-Carolina head-to-head matchup as being a game for all the marbles.

Predictions are silly, of course.  We have no idea who’ll suffer injuries, who’ll play better than expected, who’ll play worse than expected, or — in Georgia’s case — who’ll land a two-game suspension for off-field shenanigans between now and December.  That said, everyone’s supposed to make picks and prognostications and this latest kick to Georgia’s ribs has us ready to step way out on a limb…

We’ll take South Carolina to win the SEC East (even though we don’t trust Connor Shaw’s passing ability and we’ve yet to see Marcus Lattimore post-knee surgery) and we’ll tab Alabama in the SEC West (because as we pointed out earlier today, no one repeats as SEC champs anymore).

There are plenty of reasons why most folks think LSU and Georgia will face-off in Atlanta for a second consecutive year.  But we’ve got our own reasons for thinking it’s going to be Carolina and Bama instead.  One of which is the on-going offseason of attrition in Athens.

How is it that Mark Richt was able to cover-up this DUI for May, June, July and August ?

Mark Richt said 19 July 2012 : “There’s been more attrition the last couple of years than there has been since we’ve been at Georgia.”

Well, let's see now, buddha22, we had 67 scholarship recruits plus one transfer-in remaining of the 107 Mark Richt signed to play our best shot 2012 with a schedule of 1 game against The Five (5) SEC teams in the Coaches' Poll Top 10, but we have to SUBTRACT from that number

(5) Chase Vasser # 9 in the nation strongside LB, DUI 4 months ago, Suspended 2 games at least.

Only problem with that list is that we KNOW 5 failed the NCAA Drug Test during Spring Practice back in April 5 months ago, and we know that Greg McGarity said "ask Mark Richt; he's the one who is holding back information of the Suspensions."  So, actually what we have available to play is 67 scholarship recruits plus one transfer-in minus Five (5) we know of and double that number who failed the NCAA Drug Test April.

It is a fair bet that the answer to your question is :

How many of these players will actually miss the MIZZOU game?

I just have one question...how does the coach keep walking away from year after year of arrest...suspensions etc and he's supposed to be this great coach...high morals...looks to me like he recruits anyone the thinks can help georgia win and takes a chance...If this was Miami...SouthernCal or any of the other notorious cheaters he would be considered a cheat...low chatacter do anything to win type of coach, or even worse maybe a Calapari?

Fine. Here goes. I admit I made a joke about your mascot, and viciously bludgeoned your institution of higher learning. I will say in my own defense- I did not castigate the Georgia players as mindless thugs, it's supporters as drunken fools, nor it's coeds as boorish Trollops. I did, however, call your mascot a halfwit. And for that- I sincerely apologize.

Oh for cryin' out loud GeoffDawg - "public bludgeon? "  To quote Sergeant Hulka, "Lighten up, Frances."

It's a sad state of affairs in Athens this offseason. If this doesn't provide leverage for a consistent, conference-wide disciplinary policy, I don't know what does. I do think I saw somewhere recently that Alec Ogletree may play against Mizzou but that might just be wishful thinking on my part. From a fan and alum's perspective, it's certainly frustrating that this is used time and again as a public bludgeon (not from the writers here but the commenters like Mr. Bad Example down below) to impugn the reputation of the university and the program. This despite the fact that Coach Richt and McGarity are some of the few in the business that always comport themselves with integrity regardless of the on-field cost. CMR may or may not be the HC five years from now but I'm proud of how he represents the team.

Eh, let's just say we hate Georgia on for good reason, and leave it at that. Besides, we're all tired of seeing that overbred halfwit pup named as best mascot every year. Blech.

Rabble Rabble Rabble... Why do you hate UGA? Rabble Rabble, your always picking us to lose.. Rabble Rabble.. You're a South Carolina Homer... Rabble Rabble.. Athens is overpoliced.. rabble rabble.. Our discipline policies are tougher then everyone elses..

@BuLLdawg Daahhhhwwwggg! Dude, where does UGA recruit, Juvee Hall and the Georgia Penal League?

SabanGreyshirtedHisMama

@badbadhoggie You are an ignorant troll. Name 1 school in the SEC that wasn't recruiting Crowell? The kids that Richt signed are the kids that Bama, Auburn, Florida, Tenn, South Carolina and Arkansas try to sign. The difference is that when players do stupid stuff like throw bottles at cars in Knoxville, go on drunken binges in Columbia or get busted in Gainesville they get a slap on the wrist and things are swept under the rug or at worst they are suspended for 1 quarter of a meaningless game.

I'm assuming from your handle that you are a Razorback, so until Mark Richt starts bonking a lady in the athletic department, you can kindly STFU!

Not trolling at all...just dont understand with all the issues at uga since richts arrival why is held up as the gold standard of morals etc...looks like he's following the Chizick...Meyer ...book of recruiting!  And as far as a coach bonking a sexy 25yr old...that is totally unacceptable...its much better if ur AD is caught with some skank speeding down the interstate with her panties on his head...lmfao
