Texas’ Brown Tries To Follow SEC Blueprint

Balanced on offense.  Faster on defense.  More physical in general.  According to The Houston Chronicle, that’s Mack Brown’s new blueprint for Texas.  And if it sounds familiar, SEC fans, it should.  That blueprint comes straight from last year’s BCS Championship Game featuring Alabama and LSU.

Mike Finger writes that Texas’ coach paid special attention to that matchup:

“Both teams owned dominant defenses built on speed, aggression and an unending array of looks.  Both teams employed diverse running games with multiple big-play threats.  Both teams were loaded with NFL talent on the lines of scrimmage, in the secondary and in the return game.  And neither asked its quarterback to be a superstar.”

Armed with that blueprint, Brown says the Longhorn program “is headed back in the right direction.”  Well, as numerous teams in the SEC and around the country can tell him, that blueprint is easier to write down on paper than it is to actually put into action on the field.

Trying to mimic the typical SEC style is certainly a wise move considering the SEC’s big-game success over the past six years.  But not everyone can make it work.  Plus, Urban Meyer at Florida and Bobby Petrino at Arkansas both showed that you can win in the SEC without following the traditional blueprint.  And Auburn’s superstar quarterback route worked pretty well with Cam Newton at the controls of Gus Malzahn’s up-tempo spread.

Run the football ball, have NFL-worthy linemen, be balanced on offense, have speed and aggression on defense, etc, etc.  How many teams out there don’t want to go in that direction?

What’s interesting is that while Texas wants to try the SEC approach in the Big XII, Texas A&M has hired a coach known for throwing the football more than he runs it (though the perception that Kevin Sumlin doesn’t run the ball at all is way, way off base).

We’ll see who has more success in the long run.  The Texas school trying to mimic the SEC.  Or the other Texas school that’s actually joined the SEC.

Well, to be fair John, Texas demonstrated the ability to win with their own formula a few years ago, so looks like they will do at least okay with this model. What we have proven though, with every article you publish that has A&M and Austin in it, is just how much the Austinites don't belong in the SEC. No sense of style, at all. Sort of one note ponies, "We hate A&M," is all they got. Can't beat Bama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, UF, et al, but in the last 30 years, by golly they could bat .50 - .50 against the Ags. Big whoop, lots of trash talk and not much else......

 @BonzaiB

Yeah, that's what your league is known for..."style".  7-1-1 against Bama.  55-21 against Arky, who cancelled the 2009 game with UT to play...A&M.  Don't recall playing either Auburn or UF in the last 30 years.  #2 Winning-est program in CFB all time.  Richest athletic department in the NCAA.  Plenty of substance "Bonzai".

Incidentally, have you got your oxygen mask ready for your nose-bleed seats at Kyle Field yet?  Assuming that you got a ticket after A&M screwed y'all out of 2,500 seats.  http://www.gatorcountry.com/swampgas/showthread.php?t=233520

Oh, and Aggy's only real success against The University occurred while their unscrupulous coaches, both Jackie Sherrill and R.C. Slocum, cheated their way to a few SWC titles.  But, I guess that's business as usual in the ESS EEE CEE.

Wow...y'all sure are dominating against non-conference opponents.  http://www.thepostgame.com/commentary/201208/better-without-em-northern-manifesto-southern-secession-chuck-thompson-sec-bcs

See ya'll in Oxford!

@JB TexasEx Like I said, all you got is hate. Not a thing positive in anything you say about anyone. You are too ignorant to have style. Style requires give and take. I don't think the Big 12 lacks style, but we know you don't have it. So wrap yourself in your school colors and do your sixth grade rants troll. The only thing you do with your posts is convince us you don't have what we want, and loads of what no one else does.

@BonzaiB Bless your little heart, Bubba, for feeling compelled to reply with such long-winded, nonsense.  "If you deduct 3 points for the HOME team, Bama wins one and Texas wins the other by a single point." LOL...and if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.  Rice was fairly dominate in the 50's, too, since you're a trivia buff.  Here's one more fact about the "dominating" SEC; 21-17 all-time versus the B1G in bowl games.

TAMU won't be "eating our lunch" b/c they're not, and won't be, on the schedule anytime soon.  Aggy averaged sixth place in the Big12 and improved their record to 5th against the titans of the SEC West; Arky, Ole Miss, Miss St. and Au-barn.

LOL...We're Texas. Learn it, know it, live it.  ESS EEE CEE!

@JB TexasEx  @BonzaiB Your "facts" can be a bit misleading!

Your 7 - 1 - 1 should be taken in context

5 of those games were played in Texas

1 game was played in Alabama in 1902!! ====> 110 years ago!

Since 1970 Texas has played Alabama 3 times

13 - 17 in the 1973 Cotton Bowl

12 - 14 in the 1982 Cotton Bowl

37 - 21 in the 2010 BCS MNC (played in the neutral state of California)

While I will be happy to give Texas the credit for the Cotton Bowl wins they did not exactly blow the Tide out in those games. If you deduct 3 points for the HOME team, Bama wins one and Texas wins the other by a single point. The point spread on the 2010 game is way more than 3 points. If you really want to play the 7 - 1 - 1 card then bring up the domination Vanderbilt has on Texas! The cellar dweller of the SEC has a record of 8 - 3 - 1 against the mighty Bevo with 9 of those games played in the state of Texas. Texas got beat in their own house and only made 4 trips to Nashville where the Dores defended their house with a perfect 4 - 0 record and some dominate games - 6-0 / 33-0 / 45-0 / 14-6. In short they whupped your team so bad the folks in Austin stopped playing them and started playing Oklahoma at the State Fair instead.

Claiming 55 - 21 against the Hogs is just as delusional. Most all those games were when the Hogs had to play second fiddle in the SEC. here is the record since the Hogs joined the SEC

1/1/2000 the Hogs won 27 - 6 in the Cotton Bowl

9/13/2003 the Hogs won 38 - 28 in Austin

9/11/2004 the Horns won 22 - 20 in Fayetteville

9/27/2008 the Horns won 52 - 10 in Austin

That is a 2-2 record vs an SEC team and is not as lopsided as adding the SWC years to puff the numbers

Who cares if Texas has the #2 spot in all time wins if those wins came from teams with little or no college football prowess. Playing the Tide once in a blue moon is not like playing the Tide, Vols, Tigers, Auburn, Dawgs, and Hogs all the time year after year. The funniest part of all is talking about all that money. Even being that rich puts you #3 in the B12 behind Oklahoma and Nebraska with much smaller pocketbooks. All that money and you still can't buy you way to the top or buy class. Have fun when when TAMU eats your lunch in a decade or so with the SEC family. You can say it will not happen but the history does not seem to agree. Tulane got overshadowed by LSU and Georgia Tech has fallen behind Georgia. Clemson once dominated South Carolina but the worm has turned since the Cocks joined the SEC. Enjoy your past because it is all you will have someday if you keep up the arrogance.

See you in the funny papers because you seem to think Sagarin defends your points when you can not win on the field against the big boy schools. Bless your little heart

You're a "real man", Bonzai.  You are a d-bag b/c you engaged in the same behavior that you're calling me out on.  Lame, condescending smack-talk.  Hypocritical.  A&M fits right in with you turds.  LOL...more respect from Ags on a SEC blog!  What does that make you?  The tallest midget?

Oh, I can handle you and most ESS EE CEE bloggers.  I'll check in from time to time locked and loaded.  Looking forward to Ole Miss in Oxford.  Hook 'em.

@JB TexasEx Again, no ability to read. I did not say I did not like Texans, said exactly the opposite. How is it you always twist what others write?

Again, the mark of a man full of spittle and not much else. And d-bag? Can't handle someone calling you out for your behavior and you go to d-bag?

Lord, I am getting a whole lot more respect for Ags every time you post.

JB TexasEx
JB TexasEx

@BonzaiB Reading comprehension is a struggle for you, huh, Bonzai?  I couldn't careless if you're "done with me" b/c you haven't contributed anything of substance.  Just a long-winded diatribe about how you don't like Texans and me in particular.

@JB TexasEx "True, we don't like A&M.  They're dishonest, hypocritical and delusional."

 @BonzaiB

I didn't classify "an entire student body".  You did.  I will, however, classify their misguided administration as such.  That's your problem, d-bag.

BonzaiB
BonzaiB

@JB TexasEx Again, you have failed the reading test. And yep, you have given me a bad impression. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who is stupid enough to classify an entire student body as dishonest, hypocritical and delusional has some real issues that go to the heart of being an adult. It would be like me classifying all University of Texas graduates as slimey, hateful and immature based on your comments (which are hateful, but I'm sure the Ags out there are used to this level of discourse from you by now). I won't do that, because that would be stupid, ignorant and wrong. My problem is not with Texans in general, but you in particular. You cannot possibly be dumb enough to think you can back up, "They're dishonest, hypocritical and delusional," with FACTS. That borders on a form of derangement syndrome (come back and try to prove that with facts by the way, and you will have proven my point).

Nah, you're just a guy who does not get it. We don't call Vandy grads delusional because they stand by their team, we ADMIRE them for the grace and style with which they stand for their school, which doesn't do as well as some others. Gators don't like FSU, but we admit they more often than not are good eggs and we want them to be up for us when we play them. Auburn doesn't like Bama, but you rarely find an Auburn guy who has so little intellect that he resorts to calling Bama grads, as a group hypocrytical.

Anyone who generalizes their hatred across an entire student body is a jerk. Notice I did not say all graduates of Texas are jerks, I said your comments put you in that category. That's why I said you don't have style, you think quoting game stats from 50 years ago proves that, what half a million grads from a school are hypocrytes?

Go away little man. This is an SEC site, and we don't much tolerate those whose whole purpose in life is spewing garbage. We're not above having some fun with each other, but you aren't here to have fun, you are here to hang on to something we don't much care for.

You got it wrong again JB, Texas refuses to play Arkansas because they left for the SEC. Dodds was AD then and he continues the tradition of going home and pouting when other schools does not do what he says.

Aggy. Damn I bet that one hurt them - you Horn fans really know how to bring it. I'm beginning to understand why 5 major universities have been willing to pay millions to get away from you.

Wow....that stings "Jerry"

LOL...all FOUR (NU, CU, Aggy and Mizzou) did pay millions to our coffers for pennies on the dollar!  They all have also proven to be uncompetitive in their new leagues.  A loser is a loser.  See ya down the road, meat.  You were a math major at a SEC school?  Really?

Jerry Mathers
Jerry Mathers

@JB TexasEx You're not very bright, are you? Powerlines over the trailer growing up? A steady diet of lead-based paint chips? In any case, I'm sure there's a place where others of your ilk think "Aggy" is solid smack (or even funny), the Big 12 (12?) is superior to the SEC, and where you can giggle amongst yourselves about how clever you all are.

@JB TexasEx @JB Couldn't care less? Then why are you here? It wouldn't be because you're a child who thinks saying mean things about the Aggies will somehow convince the rest of us to dislike them as well, would it? You should quit while you're behind.

@Jerry Mathers  @JB Check the Sagarin Ratings from last year dunce cap.  I couldn't care less what you and the other ESS EEE CEE rednecks think is funny.  You sure do "bring it", Zeke.

Once again, we'll see you down the road.  What qualifies as solid "smack" in the SEC?  Tea-bagging drunks at the local Popeye's?  LOL.  Or maybe that's your mating ritual.

@JB TexasEx So if we're going to assume that Nebraska can't hack it after one year, does the same apply to Texas? Since Nebraska could hack it in the Big XII but not the B1G, does that mean that the Big XII is the inferior conference?

JB TexasEx

@TheN8tureBoy Nebraska got run by B1G champ Wisconsin, clobbered by Michigan and lost at home to Northwestern.  A very unimpressive 9-4

Like I said poisonous, his lack of foresight and insistence for a network that no one can see scuddled his Pac deal. Let's face it, t.u. is a bunch of west coast wannabees from the AD to the student body. Nothing to be ashamed of, that's the t-sip culture...well that and bandwagoners. Yet to deny that Dodds has done more to alienate and destroy conferences is delusional, about delusional as you thinking that people are trying hand over fist to get in the Big 12. Just admit that you come on here to troll cause your life is sad, lonely, and you are upset that A&M got accepted into the conference that it wanted and poor ol' t.u. got rejected again from the Pac again.

JB TexasEx
JB TexasEx

 @catfishaggie

Apparently, we don't care much b/c A&M isn't on the schedule for the foreseeable future.  We didn't join the Pac-12 b/c our administration decided it wasn't in our fans & alumni's best interests.  Well, that and we wanted to keep Longhorn Network.

Yeah, Dodds is "poisonous".  That's why we've got teams in the ACC and Big East lined up wanting to join the Big 12.  Once again, a loser is a loser.  I mean, who walks away from a 118-year "rivalry" for a few bucks?

What A&M does has very little bearing on our decision-making process.  Why does that surprise you?  We don't care if you have to re-write the lyrics to your "War Hymn" and re-write the curriculum for Fish Camp.  Y'all can redirect your angst towards Arky or LSU.

Who said anything about National Titles? No one, I love how you like to toss straw men every time you are on this board. You sure do spend a lot of time on here crying and wailing like a two year old about a team that you supposedly say you do not care about it. Is it because you are still mad that A&M didn't want to go to the Pac-12 with you? Is it because that other conferences see the poisonous well that Dodds is?

JB TexasEx

@catfishaggie Still waiting on Arky's first SEC football title.  What flavor is the maroon Aggy Kool-Aid? Prune?  It's gotta be b/c most of you clowns talk out of your a$$es.  But, I guess your two bowl wins over the last 16 years gives you room to talk.
