Arkansas wide receiver signee Eric Hawkins wasn’t pleased to find out Tuesday that football coach Bobby Petrino had been fired.
“I’m a little irritated about my coach leaving,” Hawkins told MrSEC. “I guess things had to be done. I honestly didn’t really think they’d get rid of him. Everybody makes a mistake.”
Petrino’s mistake was a costly one, but his departure won’t affect Hawkins’ desire to play football at Arkansas.
“I don’t reevaluate anything,” said Watkins, who attends Longview (Texas) High School. “A football program isn’t based on coaches you have, it’s the effort you put into it.”
Hawkins said he spoke to secondary coach Bobby Allen shortly after Petrino was placed on paid administrative leave on Thursday. Allen told Hawkins to sit tight.
“He just told me not to worry about it,” Hawkins said. “I wasn’t really worried about it.”
Offensive line signee Cordale Boyd from Memphis (Tenn.) Ridgeway High School didn’t seem too worried about Petrino’s departure. When reached Tuesday night, Boyd declined to comment on Petrino.
“All I have to say is WPS,” Boyd said. “Woo Pig Sooie.”
