VU’s Franklin Gigs UT’s Dooley On Nashville Radio Show

When it comes to throwing barbs at other coaches, the SEC has a new bad boy in its ranks.  In the ’90s, Florida’s Steve Spurrier famously tagged Georgia’s Ray Goff with the moniker “Ray Goof.”  In 2009, Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin suggested that Florida’s Urban Meyer was a cheater.

While not going to those lengths, Vanderbilt’s James Franklin took a little swipe at Tennessee’s Derek Dooley yesterday.  And he knew exactly what he was doing.  The second-year coach called into Nashville radio station WGFX-FM 104.5 to gently steer the conversation away from UT and towards VU.

According to show host Chad Withrow on Twitter, he drew a comparison between the SEC’s two Tennessee-based head football coaches.  Franklin didn’t exactly agree with the host’s assessment.

Here’s Withrow’s “paraphrasing” of the exchange via Twitter:

“Me: ‘Both you and Coach Dooley have to hire coaches and recruit.’  Franklin: ‘We aren’t similar.  How many coaches does he have to replace?’”

Zing.

Franklin has made it clear that Vandy football no longer intends to be the punching bag of the SEC.  Getting to six wins and a bowl in his first season — when most pundits expected a two- or three-win season — was a positive first step.

Of course, Tennessee fans angered by Franklin’s dig at their coach’s struggles have already lit up Twitter by pointing out that even in a “good” season for Vandy, the Dores still lost to Tennessee and still finished with a losing record.

Ah, but here’s the thing — when was the last time Vol football fans were angered by Vandy or its coach?

Like his methods or not, Franklin has changed the attitude in Nashville and that’s a pretty big accomplishment in a single year.

When was the last time a coach talked smack without anything to back it up?

The reason that Tennessee fans haven't ever gotten upset at Vandy coaches in the past is because most Vandy coaches in the past were smart enough to keep their mouths shut when talking a bout a program they have only beaten once in the last 30 years.

How is this a gig at UT? He stated a fact. Once again MrUT.com is trying to make Franklin out to be a villian. Vol fans and this website loved it when Lane Kiffin was making even more classless statements about Florida than Franklin has ever made about UT. Now Franklin is satan to Vol nation. UT has fallen to the depths where they are competeing with the Vandys of the world instead of the Fla and GA's and are not even close to the Bama's. Enjoy the fact that the East's cellar has a new member. Most Vol fans want rid of Dooley anyways why defend him now?

benny you must not understand stocks....if you bought vandy right now, you'd probably be buying high, and if you bought ut right now you'd be buying low.

If Vandy and Tenn football were both stocks, who would you buy? Vandy is getting better and Tenn is getting worse. Franklin just got an extension and my money says Dooley gets canned after next year. Tenn. is so far behind Bama, Ark, LSU, etc., they can' even see 'em. The SEC East was dreadful this year and they lost in Fla, Ga, Carolina, and KY....

James Franklin is Lane Kiffin in black face. Lets see what the sentiment is about him at the end of next season.

Vanderbilt went a bowl game, Tennessee did not. Vanderbilt Beat a struggling Kentucky, Tennessee did not. Franklin Is considered a good leader and has made Vanderbilt think they can win. Dooley is on the hot seat and could be in his last year. Vanderbilt lost 2 coaches to better positions, UT lost coaches to the same position. Tennessee lost to Kentucky this year and Vanderbilt in 2005 because of this entitlement attitude and it must go or the big orange may spend several years looking up at the Black and Gold.

Tennessee fans liked Bobby Johnson and he actually beat us And won his bowl game! He had class though. This other guy is a punk.

Maybe it's because those other Vandy coaches layed down and took UT's crap is the reason they lost all those times. It and UT was a powerhouse and now is living on it's past instead of realizing it's no longer a top 25 program and is equal to UK and VU at this moment. You can't just throw your helments onto the field and beat those teams by 40 anymore. The other SEC teams owe UT nothing and UT has never shown any other SEC program respect. They always ran up the score on teams when they could. I know this is a UT fan and homer site and the Founder is a huge UT fan, but UT fans need to look themselves in the face and change instead of being offended because some other coach/team didn't kiss your rear

Are you linking this article to show how the Tennessean's headline doesn't match the content of the story? For those that don't want to click, the headline states a recruit's father felt Vanderbilt wasn't truthful during the recruiting process. The article details that the problem was his disappointment that Vanderbilt wouldn't "guarantee his son playing time." As Coach Franklin tells all his recruits, "The only guarantee is that the best guy will play. If you're willing to work hard enough to be the best, then you don't have anything to worry about."

BUT and that's a BIG BUT, Tennessee didn't lose to Vandy. James Franklin seems to be dreaming that he beat the Vols but he didn't. Maybe James should take a look in the mirror? He's nothing more than another name on the list of the last ten or so (?) Vanderbilt coaches that couldn't beat Tennessee.

@sec_fan hahahahahahahahaha, you conveniently left out that in UT's worst ever season they BEAT Vanderbilt in one of its best seasons ever.

Took UT's crap? When has UT ever had to give Vandy any crap about beating them? About fifteen years ago Alabama was in the same position that the Tennessee program is in now. College football runs in cycles, the great programs as in UT, Alabama, Michigan, FSU, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Nebraska all have their down years and a few of the previously mentioned programs are in the midst of their down years now. You can hold a program that is top ten in wins for a while, but they will always find their way back to the top at some point. Franklin just happened to take over at Vanderbilt while Tennessee is down. It's not going to last forever. The Vols aren't in the top five nationally in bowl appearances and wins because they have had a couple of lucky seasons. When Vandy gets close to Bama and Tennessee in SEC titles (top two) then get back at me. In the meantime, James Franklin lost to the worst Tennessee team in at least fifty years last November.

Running up the score is crap and UT did it not only to Vandy but everyone else. Peyton Manning padding stats by throwing TD passes in a 49-3 game is running it up. Like I said UT fans are living in the past. As you quoted me the entire history of UT football. It's possible that both progams accend at the same time making this a true rivalry. Like I said this is a 1st UT fan site 2nd a rest of the SEC site I understand that. But what has Franklin said or done that was so bad? Yet there are links on here calling him a liar, suggesting he's running off payers (all of which have degrees), now this. This site has never given him any credit for at least make Vandy respectable. It's all out attack from MrUT.com

P.S. I just think James should do his talking on the field that's all. Good luck to the Dores, maybe next year? If it happens, I hope runs his mouth for 365 days until we meet again. That will be two wins in the last thirty years and that's something to brag about.
