Totally Off-Topic Subject: LinkedIn Is For People You Know

Rarely do we ever get into pet peeves on this site that have zero to do with sports.  But I’m going to get into one right here:

Do Not Send Me A LinkedIn Invitation If You Do Not Know Me.

Personally, even though everyone does it, I find it odd when people who don’t know each other try to friend up on Facebook.  So when folks zip each other LinkedIn invites having never ever worked together — having never even met — it annoys me.  Especially when the guy getting the requests is me.

I just nuked four LinkedIn requests from people I’ve never worked with, never heard of, and never met.  Why would I put those people in my professional network?  Why would they want to put me in their professional network?

If you don’t know someone and have never worked with them, please don’t send them a LinkedIn request.  Facebook’m instead, if you must.  But LinkedIn was initially supposed to be a professional contact list.  Are we all so lonely and cut off from one another that we have to fake friendship with strangers on multiple websites these days?

And another thing… get off my lawn!

Mr John, have no fear, you will never receive any form of an invitation from myself, I do not entertain relationships with "short people". Lol, just wanted to mess with you, enjoy your day.

Not sure how I look on TV, but I'm 6'0 straight up. Not sure that that makes me short.

Now, overweight... that I can't deny.

You have a good one, too.

@John at MrSEC That must be your rivals.com height, lol (players always lie about their height). Just teasing you. You're a great reporter, I appreciate your opinion and context. Again, thank you Mr Pennington!

Do you link with LIONs or Professional Groups? I link with people I don't know, in a professional manner, to expand my network (as long as it's professional and industry specific).

@BamaCLT

I do with both. If you want to link with me, my email is jason@onetentech.com... lol

Yeah, come on guys. MrSEC is a wildly popular guy! He's the only person who gets spammed with BS LinkedIn and Facebook messages. That's because he's so popular and successful! I mean in the cutthroat world of sports blogs, where only Harvard MBA's need apply, a LinkedIn connection to John Pennington just might be the ticket! But seeing how only serious journalists need to tap into his vast network of basement-dwellers and awww-shucksers, cut the guy a break. You can only hit ignore so many times in a day...

1. I was talking about people doing that to anyone. You're the one who seems to think I view my own self as special. I don't, by the way.

2. You put a lot of ugly stuff in there that I've never said or thought. Hearing things in your head that other people don't actually say probably isn't a sign of good mental health.

3. While I'm not special and I was clearly suggesting that folks not send any people they don't know invites -- heck, I wrote that right in the piece -- at least I'm not a jackass like you.

So I guess I do have that going for me.

@John at MrSEC I'm a jackass because I'm mocking your self-important, non-sports rant about something that the rest of the world deals with everyday? Mental health? Lol. You're starting to sound like one of those lunatics that got after Mike Hamilton...

Shoot, I can tell you all kinds of ways you would never think a LinkedIn connection would be of use to you down the road & you not needing it right that minute. I'd estimate to have made over $100k using LinkedIn over the 4 eyars I've been using it, but my line of work is a little bit different from yours. However, being an open networker I have made connections with people I had no clue who they were, wasn't particularly working in a space they were occupied in, & thought more than likely would never do me any good.

However, on more than one occasion I have benefited from accepting an invite & it either directly or indirectly helped me make a connection with a business client. For your purposes, I could see it driving more traffic towards Mt. SEC or even ratings for the Sports Source for people (unilke me) who don't know about either of the two. Either way, I feel it's always better to have it & not need it than it is to need it & not have it...

That said, since I'm a fan of the Sprts Source show, Mr. SEC, & a LinkedIn member would you accept my invite? lol

Newt Gingrich would have tried to send a LinkedIn request to Ronald Reagan. My guess is that the Gipper would have declined.

You tell em Mr. SEC to STFU.

That's a bit stronger than I would have worded it, but yes, that does describe my general feeling as I delete those things each day.

Thanks,

John
