SEC Headlines – 1/17/12

Gotta lot of radio to do today plus CSS tonight, so we’re gonna jam all the day’s headlines into one post.  Ready?  Here goes…

1.  Florida’s Patrick Young is battling ankle tendinitis.

2.  Georgia should be well represented in the NFL draft.

3.  Freshman tailback Keith Marshall challenged sophomore receiver Malcolm Mitchell to a foot race… and almost beat him.  (Video.)

4.  Mike Anderson says his Arkansas team will be on the attack against Kentucky tonight.

5.  Meanwhile, this writer says the UK-Tennessee multi-sport rivalry is becoming a good one.

6.  South Carolina is going to be awfully deep at running back next season.

7.  Cuonzo Martin wants Tennessee to cut down on turnovers.

8.  In Knoxville, it’s all about defense.

9.  Ex-Vanderbilt coach Ricky Logo has been hired onto Houston’s football staff.  (Corrected: Logo was NOT on VU’s staff this past season.)

10.  New Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier is described as a Jim McElwain clone.

11.  An idiot, scumbag Alabama fan could face jail time for his videotaped assault on drunken LSU fan.  (If any of the folks captured in the NSFW video are UA students, the school should boot ‘em.  By doing what they did and laughing at a poor drunk guy they embarrass the school they supposedly love.  Here’s hoping some these heartless losers go to jail.)

12.  With quarterback Barrett Trotter leaving, Auburn will have in 2012 its sixth different opening day starter in six years.

13.  Auburn needs a big night from Frankie Sullivan tonight at LSU.

14.  Brandon Mitchell — Arkansas’ backup quarterback — could make his hoops debut tonight.

15.  The Hogs see tonight’s game in Lexington as an opportunity to make a big impression.

16.  LSU will try to get back to .500 in league play against Auburn this evening.

17.  It’s official… Gunner Kiel has enrolled at Notre Dame.

18.  Unlike Dan Mullen, Rick Stansbury isn’t boasting of his team’s success against Ole Miss.

19.  Dundrecous Nelson — Ole Miss’ leading scorer until he was dismissed following a pot arrest two weeks ago — will transfer to Jackson State.

John,

Also, why identify him as "Alabama fan?"

Is that the most important thing?

Why not:

"White Guy assaults..."

"Accountant assaults..."

I hear he's from the Florida panhandle, so why not

"Native Floridian assaults..."

If he's a Christian...

"Christian assaults..."

If he likes Pizza as his favorite food...

"Pizza lover assaults..."

If he likes to listen to Clay Aiken...

"Clay Aiken lover assaults..."

But then again, using your logic, all white accountants from Florida who are Christians that like to eat pizza and listen to Clay Aiken should ALL be embarrassed by their fellow man.

John,

Picked up nationally? Besides a small AP story (which is only picked up regionally many times, depending on the story), it was only picked up in local newspapers.

I must have missed it on CNN, ESPN, FoxNews, USAToday, NBCNews, CBSNews.

And no...the University President is NOT embarrassed about this. Why would he?

Again, some random guy wearing a red shirt who is not officially associated with the university /= university being embarassed.

You know, I saw Snooki on MTV doing some highly questionale, disgusting things on MTV the other day...she was wearing a LA Lakers Jersey.

Should the Lakers be embarrassed? Should Kobe? Should the city of Los Angeles?

She was also wearing Nike tennis shoes with the big check on them. Should Nike feel embarrassed? Are they officially associated with Snooki.

Penn St. scandal = real scandal b/c it happened within the walls of the institution and university employees condoned it.

Drunk guy wearing a red shirt doing stupid stuff that they do on Bourbon street = Nothing to do with the University, the football team, Alabama fans.

Someone's from another planet alright.

Unplug the interenet one night and get some fresh air.

Bama = the ends justify the means. The arrogance is astounding. They are very upset that their minions dare not bow at their feet - it is their game, after all, where is our gratitude for them letting us play it?! Yes, Bama fans, it is possible for a fan to embarrass your school, and yes, every school has them. It just seems it is more prevalent and thus unremarkable, that the embarrassing act comes from a Bama fan.

Bama Fan Attacked by LSU Fan and now his jaw is wired shut for 6 weeks.

Now, should LSU fans feel embarrassment for the actions of 1 random person who happens to wear purple and gold?

Should their university?

From Article

"There were shoulder to shoulder people. So we kind of came across two LSU fans who were walking in the opposite direction," said Harris. "One of them spoke, and it wasn't loud or mean or anything and then my father-in-law responded, 'well at least we kept it in the SEC,' it wasn't meant in a deragatory fashion at all and really didn't have that tone in his voice. The out of the blue the LSU fan just decked him...hit him right in the jaw. And then we turned around to check on him, and then as soon as we turned back around, I mean this all happened in a split second, then they were gone."

"Both sides of his jaw are broken. They only had to plate one side. He will be wired completely shut for 6 weeks. He's in a good deal of pain right now, but doing well. It's been an emotional roller coaster. I've been happy that he's still alive, sad that someone would do this to such a good man, angry and ready to find out who did this."

The family says they weren't the only ones to encounter violence in New Orleans after the BCS National Championship Game. Their surgeon's daughter got robbed at gunpoint, and their co-worker's nephew got stabbed that night."

John,

First of all, I'm a recent Alabama graduate. Why should I or the university be embarrassed of some random guy that none of us know who just so happens to root for the same team I do. That has to be the stupidest correlation I've heard in my life. Why make hasty generalizations about an entire fanbase based on one random guy who happens to be in a crimson shirt. I don't know him. He has nothing to do with me or my university that I graduated from.

This is a scene played out at frat houses across the country. Also, this is Bourbon Street...it probably wasn't even the 758th worst thing that happened there...that night.

We're talking about a place where women flash their breasts for beads...we're talking about drunk idiots. This feigned outrage is as disgusting as the video...which IS disgusting.

Secondly, where is your outrage about this??? --->

Alabama fans are becoming notorious for turning themselves in regarding criminal acts. First Updyke admits his deed, now a video of this crap goes viral.

Hard to believe that the most intelligent people in the state of Alabama are on the football team/coaching staff.

Just one clarification. Coach Logo wasn't on James Franklin's staff this year. He was the D-Line coach under Johnson and Caldwell.

@Interested observer Show me some video evidence and it becomes a story. When the story goes viral it gets worse. The university was represented, hence the article.

@Interested observer This was in illegal act. No one cares about what else was going on without evidence, but we have here proof of an illegal act. Do you have any idea why the guy in the Alabama shirt was in New Orleans? I think I do. Both universities have said they are not the center of the investigation. The guy could get charged...not the university. But yes, he is directly associated with the university since he buys university apparel and purchases tickets through the university and was there to watch his university play football. There was no "hasty generalization," just direct judgments made by John to those involved. They should be in trouble. That's obvious.

I'll agree with you about Bourbon, and I disagree with John about the whole "poor drunk LSU fan" thing...there are no poor drunk LSU fans--really, there are no poor drunk people in general--but especially no poor drunk LSU fans. You pass out in a Bourbon Street Krystal at all, National Championship game or not, and bad things are going to happen to you. "Teabagging" may be a common occurance in Alabama frat houses, but I assure you it is not a common occurance in Arkansas frat houses, having lived in one myself; in fact, it doesn't happen at all, ESPECIALLY with complete strangers.

brian...

And if you tried to do what I do in a day, you wouldn't utter the word lazy. Mistakes happen and they kill me when they do, but there's nothing lazy about the number of stories and words you get here each day.

Fayettechill14...

Bingo. Let the punch story go viral and make national headlines and you'll have LSU with some egg on its face. But one guy punching another? That happens outside a lot of games, unfortunately. Sexual assault on camera... not so much.

This was a classless act by some idiot Bama fans. That doesn't mean all Bama fans are bad and I certainly didn't write that. But if people don't think the University of Alabama president -- for example -- is embarrassed by this... then they have no touch with reality. Harvey Updyke was a lone idiot, too. Unfortunately, Bama's making national news again and again thanks to lone idiots.

As for the drunk LSU fan, sure, it serves him right to get drunk. But I'm a more compassionate person than that. I think someone in the room should've tried to help the guy... either with a taxi or an ambulance. Leaving him passed out was bad enough, laughing as another guy rubbed his genitals on his face was criminal.

Any Alabama fan who doesn't grasp these facts must come from another planet.

Thanks for reading.

John
