Mizzou Students Welcome Selves To The SEC In Embarrassing Fashion

When your school’s invitation to a new conference is met with yawns (or worse) from many existing fans in that league, the solution is obvious: white guys rapping!

Perhaps satire, perhaps a real attempt at launching a music career, a trio of what we assume to be Missouri students has indeed put forth a rap video.  Complete with the Tiger basketball team and the “Mizzou Competitive Dance Team.”

It’s filled with plenty of digs at Kansas, a small shot at Arkansas (because it’s got “kansas” right there in its name), and more auto-tune than a Kid Rock album.

“We Are Mizzou,” indeed.

Tip to MU: If you’d done this with some Skynyrd it’d have gone over a whole lot better in the SEC.  Freebird!

This was not satire or parody, these guys were seriously trying to be badazz rappers. Complete and utter fail, Mizzou. Way to embarrass yourselves to all the real schools you're joining.

Hilarious in more ways than one! I'm giving the kids more credit than some. I think they were just having fun. Obviously they know they are "white kids" and in all probability know they are not very good at rapping, which adds to the humor. I don't think any of them believe their dancing skills are that good either. HINT, can anyone see the HUMOR in this? It was kids having fun, remember when we did things just to have fun. I believe everyone is taking this video a little bit more serious than those who produced it. Stop being so serious and sensitve! This comes from a 50 year old man.

John thanks for posting, and thanks for the laugh.

Gator fan here, I think it's a cool vid, they just having fun! They not using profanity, those kids are excited about the tradition at Mizzou and the move to the SEC!

As a Missouri fan I have to say, come on guys it's a joke about a video and not a big deal. This site has been very fair towards Missouri when it comes to posts going back to even before we were invited to the SEC so laugh it off and let it go, it's not the end of the world it's a joke.

I have to agree John it would have been much better if it was done as a parody of a Lynrd Skynrd song. I differ in choice of songs though because IMO "Freebird" is awesome but I'll always prefer "Gimme Three Steps".

Loved it. Kids having fun and doing something constructive with their time. I look forward to the next video. Is there anything better out there is my ?

Come on guys, this was obviously supposed to be a joke in the style of SNL's short films.

Very good technical quality on that video with segments edited together smoothly. I'm sure those students had a lot of fun putting that together. I doubt many of us could have made a video as well as they did.

In the video they rubbed the nose of a face on a plaque. It looked like it had been rubbed many times before since the nose was paler than the rest of the plaque. Is that some sort of a tradition at Missouri?

I just find it funny that the rap is about basketball. This is the SEC. No one (except Kentucky and Vandy) really cares about basketball. Thus making rap videos about your basketball achievements will get you made fun of, particularly when it's almost as bad as "Party in the UGA". We make fun of everyone in this league when a segment of the fan base does something ridiculous and puts it out there for public consumption. You may want to go ahead and learn that now Mizzou fans, because you're stuck with us for a long time.

Well, it is not always easy being the new person (remember when you started a new school when you were young). Sometimes you can be more sensitive to things that seem less threatening when youv'e been around for awhile.

So, just have some fun. We are in the SEC and that isn't going to change no matter how many students make YouTube videos.

John,

You did not see the merit in posting the video of a crime conducted by Bama fans, yet you post a video of college kids having fun? I don't understand the (il)logic. Implied also is that Mizzou fans need to conduct themselves in a certain manner which is absurd after the tree burning, NOLA crime and other criminal conducts by SEC fans.

As a Mizzou grad I have read the comments on this board and others and this condescending tone has to stop!! Your fans need to understand that with the small population combined w/o A&M & Mizzou your great product could never get a BIG10 kind of TV-deal. So instead of treating us as a liability we should be treated as an asset. Remember staying in your existing markets would be a sure sign of death, while the BIG and ACC expands.

Finally we will need a period of adjusting to the football intensity w/n the SEC, but we will surprisemany. In addition our basketball team would be the 2nd best team in the conference. I now baskeball ranks behind spring football in the SEC, but we are not coming in apologizing to anyone.

We will leave the academics out of this discussion.

BTW--you do a great job w/ your site, and I do know that reasonable people can disagree.

Fayettechill14

Columbia is a nice college town, but Missouri's students/fans are in no way SEC material...well, maybe Vanderbilt minus the academics. At least Texas A&M has an SEC-caliber fan base.

Geez people, lighten up. The students did a good job on the video - it was well done, and love the school spirit. That said, don't care for rap, and do find it humorous watching a bunch of white frat kids rapping. I'm surprised this made John's radar, but the commentary was fine - I disagree with 'embarrasing' in the sense of the effort being good. Whomever had the idea maybe ought to be a little sheepish.

Mr. Pennington,

I see this video two different ways. On one hand I think the position of most rational Missouri fans is we’re grounded realist who recognize what a tremendous honor, privilege and opportunity for us to ask and be accepted to join the SEC. We understand the value of being understated, gracious, humble and genuinely appreciative for our new conference family. We also understand the need to earn our place in the SEC through measured accomplishments. This video and it’s youthfully over exuberant “we’re bustin’ in” doesn’t speak to those values or accurately reflect the background of Missouri’s fortunate circumstance joining the SEC in any way shape or form. Some could argue from that point of view, it’s in poor taste and not the face most Missouri fans want associated with them.

On the other hand and while I don’t like the video at all, if you consider all of the work and dedication that clearly went into making it and considering they’re students, I respect their effort and attempt to promote their University which clearly demonstrates their passion. Isn’t that level of school passion a good thing? How many students do you know who go to this creatively expressive level and make it happen?? Would I like to see it done more so with those values I express above and better reflective of the University and general fan base? Absolutely!! But these are still developing students and I think through that vantage point, I can cut them some slack.

Good lord. Tiger fans are not going to make it in the SEC if this nonsense gets their panties in a bunch. Yet another reason why Mizzwho has no business in the SEC.

Wow, if you write a column (if I can call it that) that is attacking another school (whether you say it's humorous or not), don't get so defensive when people tell you that it sucks.

And yes, it is racist. There's no way you'd say the say thing about black people trying to be smart.

Mizzouer
Mizzouer

TigerFan - it's not racist to say these white kids can't rap. Did you actually watch the video?

TigerFan2012

I also find it kind of offensive that your biggest problem is that it's a bunch of "white guys" rapping and putting forth the stereotype that the SEC fanbase is primarily confederate flag waving racists. I love that our students are this excited to be coming to the SEC to take the time to put this together. It's a great opportunity for our university and I'm glad our students are aware of what a big move this is.

Welcome to SEC? Embarrassing? with that intro I thought this was going to be horrific, IMO it just looks like a frat just having some fun...I agree with you that some people should have not been in this video period, but outside of the guy with a SEC tee-shirt on, it had nothing to do with a "welcome of themselves" to the SEC, it was more about basketball, and talking about rival Kansas, not going to the SEC.

mizzoujack1

Stop being so sensitive, Rick. If this YouTube video is how you judge an entire university I think that makes you the ignorant, not a bunch of kids having a good time. Complete and utter fail,Rick.

If it was meant to be a "Digital Short" type video, there should have been a "we're clearly joking" moment somewhere in the song. There wasn't. And I love SNL's "Digital Shorts."

I'm pretty sure Kentucky, Vandy, Mississippi State, Florida, and Arkansas all care about basketball. Throw in Mizzou and that's half the SEC.

MoKelly
MoKelly

@Brad Perhaps saying no one (except Kentuck and Vandy) really care about basketball in the SEC is a tad bit over-exaggeration? It seems to me when rankings come out every week and the Tournament begins, folks will look at the teams and see how many from their Conference are listed (at least I do). There is a certain pride that your conference is well represented or dominates. I am not arguing that football isn't #1 by a long way ... but when it is basketball season its nice to have good representation from the Conference.

It is basketball season so I don't find it al lthat strange that the rap is about basketball. Also, Mizzou is having a great season so fans should be proud and happy.

Huh?

We posted a link to the incident that I think you're speaking of. I also wrote about it in detail twice and showed a still picture from it. No, I didn't run the video on the site because it was pretty Not Safe For Work (what with genitals being rubbed on a face and all).

But for what I wrote, Alabama fans ripped me as if I was suggesting ALL Tide fans had done that.

Now I joke about a bad Missouri rap video and I'm getting ripped for that as well.

And you compare the two stories as though a) they're equal and b) as though I'm offering them equal coverage in terms.

As far as a condescending tone toward Missouri, this site has never said a bad word about Missouri joining the SEC. You can go back to June 2010 and find where we -- long before anyone else was saying it -- showed that Mizzou would be a good "off the radar" fit for the SEC.

Now, if you're talking about comments, well, obviously I can't control those. Hell, read the comments on here and you'll find that this is the worst site in America run by the biggest villain in America... who happens to hate all 14 schools while simultaneously being a fan of all 14 schools.

It was a dumb music video. We laughed at it. Our mistake.

Various things I've read since MU and the SEC came together indicate that exactly the same things were said about Arkansas and South Carolina when they joined. How about you give us the same chance you got to join and grow intot this?

@Fayettechill14 You are in a good mood today. And to think I was in Little Rock over Thanksgiving and actually rooted for the Razorbacks to beat LSU. Unfortuantely, one quarter does not make a football game.

It was emailed to me by four different people in the last 24 hours. That's how it wound up on the ol' radar. I didn't think it was that big a deal.

And when I wrote "embarrassing," here's what I meant -- 20 years from now, I'd like to find these three guys and see if they're still proud of this video. I know I'd be embarrassed by some of the stuff I did in college. I'm guessing as adults in a workplace somewhere down the road, these fellas are gonna take some flak from co-workers for their rap skills.

That said, I can't get the darn thing out of my head.

Yes. Tons of them. And we've had fun with many of them since this site launched in 2008.

It was a joke. We're poking fun at a goofy video. No one's saying boot Mizzou or axe the students. And we've made fun of other -- in our view -- "bad" music videos from other schools before.

I didn't dream anyone would feel the need to post a lengthy commentary on the merits of the video.

I should have never posted it.

@Some Yahoo Easy now. By the way, its Mizzou and not Mizzwho. My son likes to say ... "if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all".

It wasn't a column, it was a quick blog post. It didn't "attack" a school, it made fun of a bunch of frat boys rapping. As far as defensive, if someone puts words in my mouth that aren't in the post, I'm going to refute those claims. That's not defensive. That's clarifying.

And I don't think it's racist at all to point out that the three guys rapping are white because there aren't a whole lot of respected white rappers in the music industry. You can be politically correct all you like, but you don't see many black NASCAR drivers or country singers, either. Pointing that out is not racist. No one is saying that there shouldn't be blacks in NASCAR or white rappers (aside from Eminem) who are taken seriously.

And you might want to get to know a person and his background and his values before -- under an anonymous "handle" -- start calling that person a racist.

Ridiculous.

I find it offensive that anyone would have skin so thin that they would claim the above post is offensive, rather than a good natured joke.

And if you could, please point out to me where it is I wrote that "the SEC fanbase is primarily confederate flag waving racists."

I don't see that in my post. Apparently you read things that aren't there. That, or you have just sterotyped all Skynyrd fans as being "confederate flag waving racists." I'm guessing they'd find that offensive.

Go find a sense of humor.

Oh, and as for "white guys rapping," please name for me the number of white people taken seriously in the rap industry. I'll give you Eminem. Next?

"No we're not knocking on the door, we're bustin in." That's the first line in the rap.

Then: "SEC, here we come. Wildcats, watch out, son. You can have your one-and-done, but I'll take Michael Dixon."

That after the line about "Coach A" and Arkansas.

Considering all that, MU's move to the SEC, and the SEC t-shirt in the video, I think, yes, it had a little something to do with Missouri joining the SEC.

Is it college guys having harmless fun? Sure. But we think it's a silly way to celebrate an entry into the SEC. And seeing as how this site is all about our views, that's why we posted the video and our opinion.

We've been very pro-Missouri at this site and this video doesn't change our view. But if I were a fan of a school, I'd just as soon not see this a video like this spreading across the internet.

John

I'm actually agreeing with you - I mean certain of those responding should lighten up. While I might have used a different word than 'embarrassing' (at least in the present tense), it's an appropriate link to throw up. In the sense of whether this gets played at a job interview 20 years from now and a request for an explanation is made, perhaps so.

@John at MrSEC Mr. Pennington, outside of effort and school spirit, the merit list for this video is short. Since we're one of the new kids on the block, I guess the saying goes "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" and this video could be that first chance for some. Your broadcasting it expands that potential a bit. Thank you for all of your efforts and I enjoy reading your site immensely.

@John at MrSEC I guess being from two different areas of the country, you recognize or hear more of what you're used to hearing or familiar with. I think I heard mostly basketball lines, and felt there were more words directed at Kansas, and Anderson leaving the program, while you may heard things that I missed. I'll give you the Wildcats line, but being from Missouri, it's very likely, anything said about the SEC and it involves Kansas is more of a dig at KU. Also MIzzou fans have hated Mike Anderson long before he moved to the SEC.

John at MrSEC

No, I got that you were agreeing. Comments have no inflections.

I still think these guys look silly. To me, I'd be embarrassed. Good skills in shooting, editing, and rapping(?), but it's silly in my view. All these types of team songs are. My opinion.
