Ex-OSU Coach Cooper Fires Shots At The SEC

Bitter much?

Former Ohio State head football coach John Cooper — a college football Hall of Famer who went just 2-14 against the SEC during his career — took a couple of shots at the Southeastern Conference on a Cleveland radio station this week.

First:

“I see some of these teams, the Auburns.  I’m told, I don’t know and I haven’t coached in that league, but I’m told that down south the Alabama’s and LSUs and some of these teams that have these great players, that maybe the NCAA needs to look into their situation.  Those teams have been on probation.  As you know, Alabama’s certainly one of the most penalized teams in college football, as is the Southeastern Conference.  We say the SEC’ the best and they are the best, but they’ve also had more NCAA violations than probably all the other leagues put together the last 10 years.”

You can bet Cooper won’t be getting a Christmas card from Mike Slive.  And it’s likely Nick Saban won’t appreciate comments tying his current program to the cheating ways of Bama’s past.

As Cooper points out, several schools in the SEC have been and are on NCAA probation.  By definition, that means the NCAA has already looked “into their situation.”  They just didn’t find anything as scandalous as the decade-long cheatapalooza that they discovered at Ohio State.

Second, Cooper dissed the league’s quarterbacks:

“They don’t have many skilled quarterbacks.  I thought Alabama’s quarterback last night was OK.  I thought LSU’s was awful and I don’t know if there’s another good quarterback, maybe the young kid at Georgia.  But I don’t know if there’s another good quarterback in the whole league.”

Of the top 25 passers in the nation according to passer rating, the SEC had three: Tyler Wilson (22), Connor Shaw (23), and AJ McCarron (25).  Georgia’s Aaron Murray finished #26.

The Big Ten — by comparison — had two of the Top 26: Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson (a one-year transfer from NC State) who was ranked #1 and Dan Persa (13) of Northwestern.

Cooper then finished the interview, went outside, and told a group of kids to stay off his lawn.

Is he serious? Someone from OSU thinking other schools have a problem? OMG, does he not read the newspapers? So, is that former tailback out of jail yet? Any new tatoos for the Buckeyes or presidents hoping Urban wont relieve them? Any other issues going on in the Big Ten with little boys?

Isn't Cooper something like 2-14 against the SEC? I can picture him as in the scene where Coach Klein is in his red pumps talking to grandma with disconnected phone.

Ha... at least he only told the kids to get off his lawn, other Big Ten coaches have done a tad bit more than that to kids. Why didn't he mention that and the lack of THAT type of scandal in the SEC. Selective memory....

(and yes I know the lawn comment was a joke)

Yeah let's ignore all the problems the Big Ten had this year with scandals and point the finger at someone else. That's odd I don't recall of hearing about any incidents of schools covering up for a child molesting assistant coach in the SEC. But apparently that isn't anywhere as 'bad' as over signing and such that the SEC has been called out over. What a laugh. That last bit was great, telling the kids to stay off his lawn. lol

also, that highly ranked Dan Persa? Yea, he got waxed by a mediocre A&M defense in the Texas Bowl.

Let's look at the stupid old man's 'facts ... from the NCAA's own database, since 1980 the SEC has been hit with 36 instances of violations and punishment. The Big 10 in that time frame? 30 times

Sumbitch is an age old BIG 10'er that is as jealous as they come. Piss on him, instead of in his cheerios.

Cooper's always come off as a whiner to me. He complained about the length of UT's cleats when they beat OSU in the 96 Citrus Bowl.
