BCS Title Game Observation 7: LSU Had The Execution Breakdowns Last Night

For two months we’ve heard folks from the Heart of Dixie claim that in Game of the Century I, the Crimson Tide simply beat themselves.  Poor execution, mental errors, etc, etc, yada, yada, yada.

Well guess who can say the same thing after last night’s game?

LSU had five penalties to Alabama’s one (and that one came with less than three minutes to play and it still ticked Nick Saban).

LSU lost the turnover battle two to nil.

Bobbled snaps?  LSU.  Low snaps?  LSU.  Dropped passes?  LSU.  Poorly run option plays?  Loss-of-composure, Favre/Romo-style interceptions?  Ditto.

While LSU looked flustered — something we felt confident we would not see last night — Alabama was focused.  In fact, there aren’t many examples of teams playing championship games as flawlessly as the Tide did last night.

As was the case with Alabama-LSU I, the loser can talk about self-inflicted wounds, but the winner deserves credit for executing well enough to take advantage of all the other team’s mistakes and miscues.
