Jarnell Stokes To Announce Thursday

Forward Jarnell Stokes from Memphis, Tenn., will announce Thursday where he will play college basketball.

The nation’s 11th-best prospect according to Rivals.com still lists Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Memphis and Tennessee. But Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com cited multiple sources on Tuesday saying Stokes’ decision will come down to Florida, Tennessee and Memphis.

Florida and Tennessee could have the advantage in that mix. That’s because Stokes plans to graduate early and enroll in college in January. Stokes could then play basketball immediately.

Florida and Tennessee both have athletic scholarships available this season. Memphis doesn’t, which means he would have to join the Tigers as a “recruited walk-on.”

As Mr. Parrish explains in the linked post above, NCAA rules do not allow “recruited walk-ons” to play in their first year on campus. That means he wouldn’t be eligible to play for Memphis until next fall.
