Spurrier Says Clemson Is Carolina’s “Big Championship”

South Carolina has a better SEC and overall record in 2011 than it did in 2010, when the Gamecocks reached the SEC Championship Game for the first-time ever.  But with Georgia reeling off seven consecutive league wins, there will be no trip to Atlanta for this year’s Cocks.

Instead, Steve Spurrier is focusing on Saturday’s regular-season finale with Clemson:

“I used to say if I could only win one of them, I’d always take the conference championship.  To me, that’s what you play for no matter where you are anywhere.  I know our fans don’t look at it that way, but we’re going to try certainly our best (to beat Clemson) because we have no conference championship.  So this becomes our big championship of the year right now.”

Spurrier says his team wants to win on Saturday and in its bowl game in order to set a new school record for wins in a season with 11.  The Gamecocks are currently 9-2.  Clemson — which is headed to the ACC title game next weekend — has the same mark.
