SI’s Staples: The Big 12 Should Let Mizzou Go To The SEC

Andy Staples of SI.com sounds fed up with a legal posturing and the resulting delays they cause in the current expansion/realignment game.  We feel ya.

In his latest column for Sports Illustrated’s online arm, Staples states that it’s time for the Big 12 to just let Missouri go to the SEC if it wants to go.  In fact, he’s for a full free agency period.  “If a school wants to move, let it move,” he writes.  “Let every school take the best conference deal it can get, sign some new media rights contracts and let the rest of us enjoy what’s left of this football season before the world changes next year.”

And what prompted this talk?  The slow dance Missouri and the SEC appear to be making toward one another:

“… the SEC isn’t going to just sniff the roses Mizzou sent, blush and invite the Tigers to share in its overflowing honey pot.  SEC presidents are as worried now about potential litigation from Big 12 leftovers as they were when they began their forbidden dance with Texas A&M this summer.  This is not a done deal yet.”

When the SEC accepted Texas A&M’s membership application unconditionally, it was widely speculated that the SEC must’ve gotten some assurance that the remaining Big 12 schools were no longer considering lawsuits.

But if you read this site everyday, you know that we did not share that view.  In fact, we wrote that Baylor president Kenneth Starr, specifically, could still attempt a lawsuit against the SEC even if the Big 12 managed to survive.  He could claim that by taking A&M, the SEC had harmed the Big 12… not killed, but harmed it.  Would he win such a suit?  He might not care.  The goal might be as simple as warning future deserters to think twice before attempting to tunnel out of Stalag (Big) 12.

In our view, the SEC’s decision to finally officially welcome A&M was based upon the league’s view that it could easily win any lawsuit Starr tossed out against it.

But if Missouri were to leave the Big 12, then all bets will be off.  Again.  Such a move cause Starr and others to dial up their lawyers.  The SEC may feel buttoned up with A&M, but not so buttoned up with A&M and Missouri.  Only Mike Slive and the SEC’s presidents know for sure.

The legal posturing is ridiculous, of course.  The ACC just raided the Big East.  The Big East is planning to grab schools from other conferences.  And Starr’s own Big 12 has stated — via interim commissioner Chuck Neinas — that it will go after any school it likes.

For some reason, the SEC appears to be the only league slowed by legal threats.  And Starr and Baylor appear to be the only school serious about filing lawsuits.

There can be no question that WVU is better than Missouri as teams go. When was the last time Missouri played for the National Championship in Football . The Tv games on the pay for view which is soon to be in the works will show how much the present and former residents of West Virginia will support the team. The SEC needs WVU as the 14th team but why not 16 teams with two divisions and be one of the first Megaconferences, which will be in three years or less.

Is it any coincidence that the SEC has a monoply on the BCS CG and is concerned about the legal impacts?

The SEC raiding what could be argued to be the 2nd most powerful conf in terms of BCS CG trips and wins, would make for interesting media for anti monoply (playoff) lobbyists.

Slive is worried about discovery. If there is a lawsuit, phone and email records could be subpoenaed which could potentially pose a problem for the SEC. While they have given the public appearance that they did not solicit any Big 12 teams, that may not really be the case. It wouldn't surprise me if someone at the SEC picked up the phone and called A&M again to ask if they were still interested. If that comes out in a court case, the SEC could pay the piper.

word on twitter is WVU is going to have a press conference tonight or Thursday. An LSU plane has left for Morgantown WV. You can find that info online and I'm not going to post links to other sites on here(per mr.sec.com). Do I believe Twitter is accurate. Not really. There is a lot of buzz about it though and you have to wonder what an LSU plane would be doing flying to Morgantown.

Maybe they accidentally left something after the game.

Just checked with an LSU friend. They inadvertently left their copy of WVU's play book in the vistors locker room.

Interesting. Paul Finebaum said Slive was not at the meeting in Birmingham. Not saying he was in Morganville.

Makes you wonder sometimes where they get some of that stuff. Might be because the key word in twitter is "twit". lol

This could be true. Just saw a funny "line" to take with it.

I'm not saying I was in MOrgantown watching him walk around. These people have pictures of the plane and him. They could be making it up and maybe it's not Morgantown. It is twitter for God sakes. lol

Since Slive and the Reps are meeting this afternoon in Birmingham, it would be hard to be in 2 places at one time. Maybe the pilot forgot to change the GPS coordinates from last week or picked up the old flight plan.

"Headlines---- Homeland security shoots down LSU plane for being in unscheduled air space."

That's awesome. Yeah, just found a picture that was taken today of LSU Plane in Morgantown and sources have confirmed that Mike SLive is in Morgantown today as well. It makes me wonder why Mike and LSU would be flying to Morgantown to get a playbook. Unless they just found a place they liked to eat at up there. I guess that's possiable. Just fly to Morgantown for some food and vistas. LOL.

Kennth Starr is a looser. Always has been, always will be. He's the snotty nosed kid in elementary school who walked around with a wedgie. Not because the bullies gave it to him, it was the nerds that picked on little Kenney!

He's had a corn-cob up his posterior his whole life. Got the big head as the "special prosecutor" who tried to bring down the President but could only come up with a soiled dress.

Threats from ole Kenny don't really scare the SEC, but the SEC isn't really interested in going through the public hissy-fit kenny would display.

So tell the powers to be to get going! Put the Big Bevo league out of its misery. Tell the PAC 12 to go after OU and OSU (you probably don't agree with that). Talk about a daily soap opera!
