Kansas’ Self Sounds Like He Wants To Kill The Missouri Rivalry

If Missouri makes its move from the Big 12 to the SEC, don’t count on Kansas coach Bill Self to fight for the survival of the KU-MU basketball rivalry:

“I don’t feel any obligation to play Missouri.  The Missouri fans want us to play, but I’m not sure Kansas fans care.  If they’re not in our league then we should do what’s best for us.  If it’s to play them in the Sprint Center, then so be it.  But I’m not sure that will be the case.”

We’ve already seen this type of punitive response from Texas.  The Longhorns have informed Texas A&M that they’re all booked up schedule-wise so the UT-A&M rivalry will go bye-bye — at least for a while — when the Aggies join the SEC.  (Kudos to A&M for being willing to play an SEC schedule and Texas on a yearly basis.)

The silliness of such talk from Texas and Kansas only makes you respect the administrators at Florida and Florida State, Georgia and Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Louisville, and South Carolina and Clemson for keeping those rivalries going despite the fact those teams reside in separate conferences.

The Kansas/Missouri rivalry would not be in doubt if it wasn't for the SEC poaching two teams from the Big 12. Why the hell did the SEC need to expand? The SEC should have remained with its 12 members. The SEC has no class whatsoever.

Kansas has no reason to continue the series. There is no sense in giving Mizery a presence in Kansas City because of recruiting. Mizery's invitational basketball idea is a no starter. The majority of basketball fans in Kansas City are KU and K-State fans. They wouldn't go to see Mizery play and have no interest in the SEC.

The above post is a perfect example of your typical KU/KSU fan, and another reason that I cannot wait to be rid of the Big 12 and their petty/arrogant/ignorant/corrupt fan base.

Yeah kudos to Georgia and Clemson for continuing to play their instate rivals even after Georgia Tech left the SEC and South Carolina left the ACC. And kudos to Florida and Kentucky for playing instate OOC rivals. There are even other schools that do it too; Iowa and Iowa State come to mind.

I was living in Arkansas when they left the SWC and joined the SEC. I know the folks there were very happy with the move and the happiness grew as time went on. So far I am experiencing why, good old southern hospitality.

I'm glad we're joining a conference of schools that look past any immediate hurt feelings they may have to preserve history and tradition.

All the examples of continuing rivalries are between teams that reside in the same state. Even if Missouri/Kansas continue to play the games won't mean as much without having conference implications.

Isn't Bill Selt 18-24 months away from becoming the best basketball coach in the Mountain West Conference? I would say the future looks much brighter for Missouri than it does for Kansas, whether or not this rivalry continues.

Same thing happened to Arkansas when it left the Southwest Conference. Things turned out just fine for them.

Yes, but Arkansas started playing teams in the now SEC West - not the East (except on the rotating basis). There were already some basis for a rivalry with LSU and the Mississippi schools...

You are being way to hard on Kansas. When conference affiliations change, things change (Pitt griped about Penn State dropping them, and now they are talking about doing the same thing with to West Virginia with their move to the ACC)....as a Vol fan, I gaurantee you that if the ACC rounded out their 16 team conference with uConn and Kentucky, I would not want UT to continue to play Kentucky annually in football as an OOC game.

That's not an equal comparison though. No one particularly considers UT-UK a great rivalry. If Bama went to another conference, I bet you certainly would try to maintain an OOC matchup.

I agree.. Missouri and KU have been in the same conference and playing each other for years. The Border War rivalry has been going on for 110 years and the animosity dates back to the civil war days. If you look at some of the arguments on the KU/MU articles the KU fans often call MU fans slavers and make reference to the civil war. This goes back to the Days of the Jay-hawkers who were pro union and would come into Missouri and fight and Missouri would counter with Quantrill's raiders going into Kansas and attacking. It was a very bloody time in the history of the area.

I don't know which coach it was but it was either Bill Self or Turner Gill who said when they were hired the one thing they were made to understand was you better beat Mizzou. Many MU coaches have admitted feeling the same sentiment from students towards KU.

Probably...and it should be much easier to keep a basketball rivalry alive than a football one. But we shouldn't be too hard on Kansas, I think given their bball history that are definitely on a different level than Mizzou and could understand them being non-commital about it right now. It's up to them, if they both think it makes sense to play they eventually will.

To give a Georgia analogy, let's say somehow Florida was being pursued by the ACC, if Florida jumped their the money would be better than staying in the SEC. If they did, would Georgia want to continue to play Florida annually? Would they choose that over Georgia Tech, they play Florida as well and then have a much tougher OOC schedule than anyone else in the SEC? In that case, could see Georgia being non-commital about whether that game continues.

Actually Illinois canceled the annual football rivalry after 2010. The reason some gave was after losing their opening game of the last 4 years in a row they wanted to stop the series. Until 2007 it was not an annual game anyway though and we cant really complain.. When Gary Pinkel took over MU in 2001 he took over a train wreck of a team and canceled a 4 game home and home series that had previously been scheduled for 2005 - 2008 with Iowa because he said he was in a rebuilding mode at MU and didn't want a rivalry game with a great team like Iowa.

Mizzou's current OOC football game I believe is with Illinois but as far as I can tell, they're willing to give that up to continue with Kansas. It's really a different scenario with Georgia because their OOC is in-state. If Florida left, as much as we'd all hate it, you can't have two regular BCS level OOC matchups and you can't just abandon your instate rival. MU on the other hand is the only school playing major college football in Missouri.

This bs posturing shows us the fundamental problem with the big 12..... It's full of arrogant asses. Did the sec like what happened with GT leaving, of course not. Was there bad blood when SC jumped out of the ACC, heck yeah. Nevertheless, the rivals kept playing, because thats what rivals do. The big 12 schools (kansas and texas) make assine comments, because thats what egotistical jerks do. Kansas deserves to be texas's lap dog, until texas finds better ones.

Wow, you're a tool. Why is the concept of playing a game against an out of conference opponent so wild and unrealistic to you? Happens all the time. Georgia Tech left the SEC in 1963 and we still end every regular season against them. You’re portraying your university as nothing but a bunch of pouting brats.

GeoffDawg

What a ridiculous claim from Bill Self”ish”. Rivalries aren’t just turned off like a light switch and accordingly, it’s rather petulant to state that since MU is leaving, KU fans just don’t care anymore. If anything, it would make the rivalry more compelling and intense. I wonder how Jayhawkers feel about Coach Self anointing himself the talking head for all things Kansas.

AllTideUp
AllTideUp

It's all pretty immature. If you are going to claim one year that a particular game is your biggest rivalry and then all of sudden "you don't care," that's just like taking your ball and going home.

MIZ_SEC
MIZ_SEC

Yeah, ku fans just don't care, yet they're trying to organize protests outside Mizzou's Board of Curators meeting and saying Mizzou leaving will kill the Big 12 tournament and cost Kansas City millions of dollars to try and keep Mizzou in the conference.

Embarrassing.
