Hypefest: ESPNU Touts New Documentary On SEC Championship Game

ESPNU’s latest “Storied” documentary on the SEC focuses on the league’s first championship game which was played in 1992.  At a site called MrSEC.com, we obviously understand just how big a role the SEC’s title game has played in the transformation of college football, athletic conferences and television contracts.

Still, this trailer might be just a hair over the top.

The show itself looks like it will be great.  No question about that one.  Bringing the old players back together for a reenactment of the game’s key play is brilliant.

But world-changing?  I’m guessing a few more folks remember Bill Clinton, Kurt Cobain, Rodney King and the LA riots than SEC Championship Game #1.  Folks outside Alabama and Florida at least.

That interception was probably the craziest I have ever yelled in my life at a football game. I remember how bitterly cold it got late in the evening and that it felt like we just could not stop the Gators from moving the ball. I have no doubts that Shane Mathews would have driven the length of the field on us as they were moving the ball with ease in the 4th quarter. Legion Field was an absolute madhouse after that INT. Langham's interception was one of many heroics he had that year, along with Teague and the rest of that #1 defense on the way to the 92 National Championship. The Gators gave us the toughest game that we had that year and there were a couple. Great memories. RTR

Fair enough point john fair enough back to sports here's hoping they do a great job on this great piece of SEC history.

I am so glad I found your site. I am a Texas Aggie and I love my new conference. Class of 77 and never more excited about my Aggies. As you can imagine I have searched and read alot the past two months. But, your site has become my one stop, timesaver stop. Thanks for the great analysis. I look forward to the next 100 years. Thanks and good luck.

See I cant stand people like Georgetown. You sir are garbage. John love the site AND the show I find both to be very entertaining. I'm sorry to hear what your dealing with as cancer is pure evil in my opinion. Keep up the good work and catch ya on CSS from time to time ...... huh not bad for a person that Georgetown described you as. I wonder what he has done with his life at this point. Or maybe he's in his mom's basement eating puffy snacks while listening to his favorite teen pop song. And trolling the internet to try to make fun of successful individuals so somehow he can make up for his pathetic existence. But what do I know maybe its the sting from the Alabama game talking :)

gatorfan6651...

I appreciate the kind words. It's been a crummy couple of months.

I don't say that for sympathy as we ALL have ills and issues to deal with in our lives. I was trying to make a point. We're jabbering on here with people we don't know... and we have no idea what's going on in their lives.

It's kind of sad, really. And I'm trying to let more things slide on my end, too. I've always felt that if someone's ugly to me, there's no law saying that I can't be ugly right back. But that doesn't go anywhere either.

Bottom line... it's just a sports site. It's an objective site because none of the 3 guys who write here pull for a team in the SEC. For that reason there's no anti-Team X bias. So what the heck is there to get so mad and so ugly about? (Says the guy who's trying to take his own advice.)

Thanks for reading,
John

I also sorry to hear about your grandmother. I have been blessed to have my grandparents as long as I have and it probably won't be that much longer before I lose one of both of them.

You'll be in my prayers for the cancer issue as well.

I appreciate the kind words. On the cancer front, I can't stress enough the importance of prostate cancer screenings for men of all ages. You're not supposed to get it at 40. I did. Catch it early and you can beat it. I appear to have done just that, but the follow-ups are a part of life at this point.

But every guy out there should get the exam and a PSA test yearly. One in six males will get prostate cancer. It only makes sense to make sure you're not one of the six.

All the best,
John

Monty Duncan ran the wrong route. it looks like Errict Rhett was playing his part in the film. I can't wait to see this.

They should do one on how Steve Spurrier was directly responsible for changing how the SEC played football, was the 1st million dollar coach, and one could argue was the catalyst for the league's success.

B. Roberts...

That's a great idea and it wouldn't surprise me if they did. A show titled "The Ball Coach" would draw the ratings. His offense, his mouth, the drama with his quarterbacks, his battles with Peyton Manning and Bobby Bowden.

I think you hit on a winner there.

If you count the 1990 team Spurrier won 6 of 7 SEC titles from '90-96. He finished 2nd to eventual national champion Alabama in '92 with a team loaded with freshman. Spurrier started the arms race that is bearing fruit (crystal footballs) today. It was all about hiring a coach and recruiting talent that could compete with Florida.

thanks for the words John. Hope this week is better than last.

Sorry for your loss Mr. SEC! And good luck with the tests.

I do appreciate the links, but your analysis has been better than most as well.

Kyle...

Thanks for the kind words.

But despite what people say about me, I'm not arrogant enough to call myself Mr. SEC. There are several folks that write here, so it's the site that's MrSEC.com, not me.

Again, thanks for reading,
John

You calling out ESPN for a "hypefest"? Seriously? Their hyping of the SEC Championship Game pales in comparison to how you hype this site and your "Nostradamus" style predictions on all things SEC. Not to mention your constant links to previous posts that you contend prove your "GENIUS." No doubt you've noticed that you get very little traffic in response to your "inside scoop" analysis (responses to your posts are embarrassingly low.) No one is here for your opinion - most visit because you provide links that we don't care to spend the time to find ourselves (thanks!) . But your ego, the very ego that your partners complain about, won't allow you to recognize that fact. But what do I know, because you are, after all, a GENIUS, the one and the only MR! SEC! DOT! COM!!!! Yet responses to your posts pale in comparison to that of even single school sites. Perhaps that's because the bloggers of those sites don't claim to be Nostradamus (as you do) nor do they get in a "snit" (as you do) when a reader disagrees with them.

BTW, on any other site of mention, this post would have been deleted long ago. But since your site isn't one of "mention" it will remain for quite sometime, unread, until you stumble (probably drunk from the beer you named your company after) upon it. Then you'll delete it, hoping that no one else saw it. And for once, you'll probably be right. Nostradamus :-)

Good grief GeorgetownDawg, what on earth compelled you to write this? Go run a lap or something. It seems like you are a bit too tightly wound. It's just football...

GeorgetownDawg...

Wow. You really, really hate me, don't you? But you keep clicking on the site, so I thank you for that.

One tip -- I wouldn't try to judge a site by the comment section. Check the advertisers instead.

Also, I'm not sure which "partners" have complained about my ego, but that's okay. If one of my partners -- I have only one, by the way -- did complain, I'd just tell him to pipe down 'cause I'm the only MR! SEC! DOT! COM!!!! (Did I get that right?)

And I won't delete your comment. You didn't curse and you didn't post a link to an ad or your own website.

Besides, in a week when I'm facing more follow-up cancer tests and having to bury my grandmother, I think it's good for other readers to see the kind of stuff I get to deal with on a daily basis.

All the best,
John

Most normal folks wouldn't allow a snippy post on a blog to compel them to wear their "cancer/dead grandmother" stuff on their sleeves for all the world to see. But you did. Always about you, isn't it John?

Are you being serious, GD? Show some class.

GeorgetownDawg...

I tend to think most nomal people wouldn't write "a snippy post" to someone they've never met... all because they've gotten enraged over a sports website. I think they'd read a site, realize that they have bigger issues in their lives and that maybe the writer does to.

But that's just me. (Whoops, I said "me.")

I'd have to agree with all of the above. John also has a very amateurish TV show in Knoxville on the Vols, so you'll notice he never criticizes UT except in a very very mild way.

Jass...

Must be why I get all that hate mail from Vol fans. I live in Knoxville currently, but I've also lived in Kentucky, Ohio and North Carolina. You might want to check the comments under this little love tap I gave to the Vols:
http://www.mrsec.com/2010/12/the-football-gods-sm...

Anyone who reads this site knows that we hand out praise and criticism evenhandedly.

As for your comment about my amateurish TV show, I couldn't agree more. It's a just a silly little show. And I'm the ugliest guy to ever be on TV, I can promise you that. So I have no idea why I've got 7 Emmy Awards in a closet.

Thanks for reading,
John

That's a great concept. World changing is a little over the top unless of course you are referring to the college athletics world.

This is the kind of stuff I think you could produce for an SEC Network. There's so many great stories down through the decades that you could dig deep into and find a great back story I'm sure. In addition to the games, I would want an SEC Network just for that type of stuff.
