Carlos Watkins Chooses Clemson

Defensive tackle Carlos Watkins from Chase High School in Forest City, N.C., has committed to Clemson.

Watkins chose Clemson over Florida.

Both programs are great,” Chase coach Daniel Bailey said, “but I think it came down to distance.”

It could have come down to on-field success this season as well. Bailey suggested last week that Clemson’s 6-0 record could help the Tigers’ chances of landing Watkins, who’s considered the nation’s fifth-best defensive tackle by 247Sports.

Florida has commitments from two defensive tackles for the class of 2012: JaFar Mann from Stone Mountain, Ga., and Dante Phillips of Venice, Fla.

Clemson’s strong recruiting continues with the pledge from Watkins, who’s the fourth defensive line to commit to Clemson for 2012.
