WV Writer Says The SEC Hasn’t Turned Down WVU’s Bid For Acceptance

On Sunday, a Twitter report claimed that West Virginia had turned in paperwork to the SEC asking for admission into the league.  Late yesterday, Mitch Vingle of The Charleston Gazette confirmed that report… and added more:

“After hours of conversations, texts, etc., with those in the know, it’s clear the Mountaineer athletic department is staring at two scenarios.

It has indeed turned to the Southeastern Conference.  It’s up to the SEC to welcome West Virginia — or turn its back.  As of Monday evening, the conference had not said no to the school.”

It’s unlikely that Mike Slive and his league would turn down WVU with such haste.  Why nix any options before it’s absolutely necessary?

We still believe that West Virginia is a perfect fit with the league when it comes to athletics, fan support and culture.  But it’s a poor fit when looking at the business of expansion due to its population-base, television markets and academic reputation.

If the SEC can find a more perfect match, then WVU will get a turn-down.  If it can’t, then WVU will be welcomed in with open arms and Slive will claim that the Mountaineers were the SEC’s top choice all along.

But we would be very surprised if the school got a quick yea or nay from the SEC either way.  The music is still playing and there are still a lot of seats to choose from.
