SEC Makes It Offical: Texas A&M Plays In The League Next Year

To the joy of Texas A&M fans — and the chagrin of yours truly who’s having to type up something on the weekend, dang it — the SEC made it official today: The Aggies are coming for the 2012 season.

The league released the news this afternoon that A&M will officially join the conference as its 13th member on July 1st, 2012.

“On behalf of our presidents, chancellors, athletics directors, students and fans, I welcome Texas A&M University to the SEC family,” Mike Slive said in a prepared statement.  “Texas A&M is a nationally-prominent institution on and off the field and a great fit for the SEC tradition of excellence — athletically, academically and culturally.”

“The Southeastern Conference provides Texas A&M the national visibility that our great university and our student-athletes deserve,” said A&M president R. Bowen Loftin via press release.  “We are excited to begin competition in the nation’s premier athletic conference.  This is a 100-year decision that we have addressed carefully and methodically, and I believe the Southeastern Conference gives the Aggies the best situation of any conference in the country.”

Longtime readers of this site know that we have stated since the salvation of the Big 12 last summer that A&M would eventually become a member of the SEC:

July 30th, 2010 — “A&M To The SEC Just A Matter Of Time”

January 25th, 2011 — “Could New Texas Network Drive A&M To The SEC?”

Even this past June, when the Big 12 announced that it would split more TV money, we said again that A&M would eventually join the SEC.  Little did we know that less than two months later, A&M’s president would dial up the SEC’s commissioner and ask for an invitation.

June 6th, 2011 — “Big 12 Applies More Duct tape, But A&M To The SEC Will Still Happen.  Someday.”

It was inevitable in our eyes.  The two entities have flirted for 25 years.  The cultural fit is perfect.  The SEC gains millions of TV viewers and fertile recruiting ground.  A&M gets a means of differentiating itself from the University of Texas and a stable home.

Do your own Google searches and you’ll find that MrSEC.com has been dead-solid right on this one every step of the way… long before anyone else was talking A&M and certainly before anyone else suggested it was guaranteed to happen.

Now, on to the fallout.  The SEC’s official website has posted some reaction from Houston sportswriter Joshua Buckley regarding the marriage.

And here’s some reaction from SECSports.com contributor Tony Barnhart.

We’ll have much more tomorrow morning on this move.  Including — we hope — the reaction from Baylor University.  The fact that the SEC has made this move official suggests that either a) BU has stopped threatening a lawsuit or b) the SEC expects BU to stop talking lawsuits now that the Big 12 is working to save itself.  We shall see.

Either way, congratulations and welcome to the Aggies.  Of all the schools out there, A&M is by far the best fit for the SEC in terms of athletics, academics, business and profile.  It’s a win-win.

And any people who say otherwise just don’t understand what conference expansion is truly all about.

Awesome to have the Aggies in the fold! I'm wondering when team #14 comes on board? Or are we going to stick with lucky 13?

John, thanks for the welcome. We look forward to being part of the best conference in America. We also looking forward to building great traditions with the storied institutions that have made the SEC great over the years. Please be prepared for the relentless trolling by upset t-sip fans, they are having issues letting go.
Respectfully,

Thanks for your coverage of this long process, Mr. Pennington. This has been a fantastic 'blog to read in the past, so I can't wait to read your take on my Aggies now that we've moved within your site's sights.

Great news!!!!! Now, we got to get it together - we've got some tough seasons ahead of us! Also, think we need to up our tailgating game! Thanks Mr SEC for all the hard work and the straight-forward, non-bias reporting on this issue. I always knew where to turn to get the real story without the agenda. Can't wait to see the A&M tab at the top of the page next year!

I love this site and you're good at what you do....but you sure do love to toot your own horn about being right. Geez.

As an Aggie living in Tennessee, I am on top of the world to finally know my Aggies are part of the great SEC. A big yell for that. Thanks for the warm welcome SEC brothers. Bring on the exciting times, great athleticism, and tough competition. I love watching SEC football, and will so more in 2012.

Now if FSU would join you in the SEC, life would be soooo good. Great job Texas A&M

I was a freshman at A&M when Gene Stallings was coach there so that tells you that I am an 'old Ag'. My dearest friend is a Gator and I am so happy that the Aggies are now in the same conference as the Gators. I live in Texas and there are so many t-shirt tea sippers here that I really get tired of them. Now tu doesn't matter; the BETTER schools of the SEC do! I think tu's network is blowing up in their face. People don't like things crammed down their throats. The general public does not know what a great, respected school A&M is with all its academics and research. The SEC is the premier football conference and now A&M is part of that prestige. This old Aggie is very happy tonight.

Mizzou isn't holding out for the B1G--they just want out of the abusive relationship with Texas. If the Curators don't vote to bolt to the amazing opportunity with the SEC, they're crazy. Why would we stay in the conference that revolves around Texas's ego, greed, and every whim?

Jamie Thornton
Jamie Thornton

My guess is FSU is the number one option. After that, it's probably Virginia Tech. But lets be honest. Virginia Tech looks like Mizzou. Virginia and the lesgislator worked hard on coming out and getting them in the ACC. They've said no to the SEC from the start. Where FSU has been kind of sending out mixed signals. I think the SEC waits on FSU for number 14. If not they probably turn to Clemson and then WVU as the last option.

congrats and glad to see you are aware of the challenge ahead:

I like where your head is at, but had a few additional suggestions of my own. maybe add some seats to the end zone of your stadium, seems like a very bizarre layout and when Bama comes to town we are gonna be bringing a city of RVs with us and we need a place to sit

and can you find some hot coeds to put in front of all those military dudes? no offense to the military, but when watching on TV the best part of SEC games is the camera sweep through the crowd of hot chicks in sundresses

Travis...

I don't like to have to toot the self-horn, either. But that's how the business works. Every TV, radio, newspaper, internet outlet lets you know when they're first, fast and/or accurate.

It makes everyone think we're arrogant jerks, but it's the only for us to prove to new readers that we've been on this one long before anyone else.

But, yes, I know that our daily readers get sick of it. And to them I apologize.

I'm with you Frank. The best option is FSU by far. Both A&M and FSU have amazing fan bases with years of tradition. They both have great rivals in the SEC. THere is no doubt, FSU should be the 14th school.

Robert, we are delighted to have you with us. We are looking forward to visiting your lovely campus with our reptilian squads and delivering an ass-whuppin' if we can. If not, we'll take ours home and do better next time. Help me out a little bit- You folks often refer to the followers of the cow as "tsips". Every single A&M fan reference to this name speaks to high bred tea-sipping draft-dodging cowards, or something fairly similar. A 5 second Google search brings back 'Texas Success Initiative Program", which without spending any time at all on, seems to point to a funding initiative for disadvantaged students. Truly not trying to start anything, just want to understand the insult correctly.

MIZ_SEC
MIZ_SEC

This is correct, but it seems hard for outsiders to comprehend. The SEC was never an option for Mizzou until this year, while the Big Ten always seemed like a possibility, so it's unfair to act like Mizzou only wants the Big Ten. The fans, boosters, and administration are fully on board with a move to the SEC - the groundswell of support the last few weeks has been astonishing.

Mizzou, we are here with you and for you. If the cow said "Kiss my ring if you wanna eat" I'd die trying to fillet her liver. Screw that. We welcome you here with us, you ain't gotta kiss nothin' , you'll get an equal share, and we want you with us. You're gonna dig it here, Blood, Bruises, Bragging Rights, and all. Your ball.

13 is an odd number, but its not as odd as trying to convince people that WVU adds something to the SEC

AGator
AGator

I don't think FSU would want to join the SEC for the same reasons they picked the ACC over the SEC 20 years ago. FSU has done very well being in a different conference from UF just as A&M expects to be better off away from Texas.

The way I've read the newspaper reports is that the SEC doesn't want WVU and the league would be OK with 13 teams. The league started out with 13 teams. The Big 10 played with 11 teams and the ACC with 7 teams and later 9 teams for many years.

$20 million is what TAMU will end up paying, or close to it. So if we are not helping TAMU why should be help FSU.

After reading all your posts, I thought you were a Longhorn. Really surprised to see a Tide, or any other SEC fan, act this way. Alabama has done too well to be degraded by you. Act like a winner. Bama deserves it.

Here are the possiblities:
1) You're a Longhorn in disguise,
2) You're thinking Bama needs to be like Texas.

Either way, see a veterinarian, Hoof and Mouth disease is lethal.

Not trying to start anything, huh? Then spend another 5 minutes of research and get your facts straight. The tsip thing goes back a long, long way.

HoustonVol
HoustonVol

The Tsip comment goes back to the draft dodging. TU adopted the phrase to try and change the meaning. Just like how the mascot received it's name. BEVO. After a loss, someone tattooed 13-0 (the final score of the game) on the backside of the longhorn. So the school branded BEVO over the top of the score and renamed the mascot. So TU is good at changing the story to fit their needs. Just like saying that it will now be to difficult to schedule A&M out of conference. However that does not stop Clemson, GTech, FSU, L'Ville, and Ark from scheduling OOC rivals. Though Ark game with A&M is about to become a conference game again.

rmft
rmft

no its not.

This isn't a conference of second choices. When we offered you the chance you should have jumped on it and said thank you. The leak to the KS Star, the unwillingness to make the move when we went out on a limb to offer you (at the time it didn't look like you had anywhere else to go) all are starting to turn SEC fans against you

At least A&M wanted in and they made that 100% clear that were we to give them the chance they would JUMP at the opportunity to come to the SEC. We may be from the south, but we aren't stupid. The fact that you didn't take that opportunity and run with it isn't b/c you want to work out differences in the Big XII, its because what you really want is the invite from the B1G TEN

gatortown

Nothing wrong with WVU, truly not hatin' and not knockin' them in any way, but the real life bottom line world of reality is that they are a small school with pretty good and entertaining athletics in a tiny market with underfunded R&D and not much coast -to coast TV value. There, i said it. Not hatin', really, you guys. It just isn't your time yet. Your academic rep sucks. Fix that. The couch burns? ya sure? Lose that trailer court mentality. Don't hate, Dude, I'm tryin' to help you here, i am. You wanna run with the big dogs and talk smack and Be Believed?
Build up your school, give it money, find it money, endow it money, promote your brand, endow R&D ( that is your true Holy Grail, engineers drive Mercedes, Liberal Arts majors drive Lexus. (Lexi?)
Earn it honors, honor and mark your graduates. Your football rep is 20 years ahead of your school. You can get the whole beast together, fur shure.. You just aren't quite there. Love you. Just not ready yet.

Yes, other leagues have played with an uneven number of teams. But it is different to have 9, such that you can play all 8 teams, or even 11 where you miss one or two teams a year. But, 13, plus divisions is quite unwieldy. The end of the world, no. But, if I were to bet on it, I say it doesn't last 2 years.

I'll take, coaches that left Texas A&M after 4 years for $400 alex

Thanks Jamie,

and also, you can't disagree with me without having to try to take personal shots at my fanhood? I responded with a few personal shots myself, but it was only in response to you trying to bash me for having a different opinion than you

I think we are all entitled to our own opinions and message boarding styles, and I wasn't doing anything in violation of the rules. I like to have some back and forth with other fans of other sec teams, a&m is now in the SEC and I made a few "jokes" in a good natured welcome to the SEC Hazing manor

I think they understood its wasn't hateful, just a little light smack talk between fans... I think they are used to much worse from the Longhorns

rmft
rmft

I think Bama was, is, and always will be BETTER than the Longhorns for what its worth

I dont want to see us end up down in the dumps like Texas, we are way too superior a program for that

at first i figured UofA meant you were a Bama fan, but you sound a whole lot more like a Razorback!!!

UofA 72 huh... thats when you graduated? You must be one of the old men at the games who gets upset when fans without hip replacements stand up to cheer

rmft
rmft

I think the scheduling problem will come from A&M...

If SEC goes to 9 games... that means only 3 OOC games. Most schools will go the 3 cupcake route, as playing 9 SEC teams should be PLENTY to put you up in the top of the strength of schedule ranks. So these tough OOC games will go from being a strength of schedule boost and a boost to your national resume... to just becoming an unnecessary burden that only makes it less likely you will run the table

it will be interesting to see how it all plays out if SEC goes to a 9 game schedule, not just for A&M, but for SC/Clem, UGA/GT, and Florida/FSU

I dont think anything will happen next year, but down the road some of these teams may feel it is no longer to their benefit to keep playing those games. When money comes into the picture, traditions seem to be the first thing thrown to the wayside

HoustonVol
HoustonVol

I actually think the team was A&M, but I am not certain about that.

gatortown

Thanks, Vol
I am a bit familiar with brand overlays, not even going there but I understand your explanation. Curious, with what team was the loss? Mostly, how you gonna let some SOB get hold of your mascot and TATTOO the damn thing? Ain't no wannabes tending it?
I''d run the lot off, myself.. .. and have a BBQ and a new mascot.
Well, just sayin'
Yeah, OOC games can be onerous, but if it is important, you can make it happen. The cow not scheduling Texas A&M is cowardice, in my humble opinion. I have watched the Hogs evolve, tasty as hogs are, nowdays one cannot snooze in the sun on the riverbank....

Enlightened us. When was this supposed offer made? The SEC has given no invitations other than Texas A&M since South Carolina and Arkansas. As an SEC fan, I am very interested to know about the offer to Missouri you claim was given. What limb did we go out on? If you are refering to the post by a supposed Missouri booster, that there was an undertable offer from the SEC, that was disclaimed immediately by the SEC. I do not doubt there may been some communication, but it is really difficult to believe that there would be an invitation by the SEC in light of the litigation threat and Slive's apparent commitment for the SEC not to be a conference buster. On the other hand, it would not surprise me if we see something tangible on the Missouri front now that the Big 12 is staying together and A&M has officially been accepted.

rmft

A&M wanted us, they made that so clear. It was the SEC that help up this deal, not the aggies, they would have joined months ago if we had let them
