De facto just means that he's "the man" on Carolinas defense. Spurrier puts more focus on offense, so Johnson is the guy to bring questions about the defense to.

I'm a little confused as to why you're referring to Ellis Johnson as SCAR's "de facto" defensive coordinator, John.

Because Lorenzo Ward's title is "Defensive Coordinator," while Ellis Johnson's is "Assistant Head Coach and Assistant Coach of Defense and Linebackers."

But Johnson is at the top of the defensive org chart... and in most cases that person carries the title of defensive coordinator.

So, while he's technically NOT the Cocks' DC, he does act in that role. Thus, "de facto defensive coordinator."
