UT’s Summitt Diagnosed With Early Onset Dementia

Those of you who regularly read know that we cover the two money-making sports in the SEC — football and men’s basketball.  Covering 24 teams every single day is quite enough work, thank you.

But I personally wanted to make a quick comment on the breaking news that legendary Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with early onset dementia.

In the mid-90s, I worked in Knoxville television and actually worked on Summitt’s first weekly coach’s show.  Getting to know her, I was amazed by her professionalism.  If she said she would arrive at the studio at 3:27pm… in she would walk at exactly 3:27pm.  She knew that a lot of other people’s schedules were just as important as hers.  How rare for a multi-millionaire coach.

Having dealt with numerous coaches in different markets since then, I can tell you — easily — that Summitt would rank #1 in terms of professionalism.  She also happened to be honest, direct, friendly and pleasant.

While she may come across as a drill sergeant on television due to her stern glare during games, those who know Summitt know that she’s really quite personable.

Summitt has been an ambassador for women’s basketball in the SEC and across the nation.  Today’s news is as disappointing as it is shocking.

We at send our best wishes to Summitt and her family.  We also have no doubt that she will tackle this challenge better than anyone else possibly could.

Thanks John. What a shame.

I hate it for her. My grandmother is starting to suffer dementia although it doesn't appear to be Alzheimer's, but I know there are tough days ahead. I don't wish this disease on anyone.
