UGA’s Boykin Tweets A Dare To Boise State’s Coach

Brandon Boykin is within one touchdown of breaking the SEC’s all-time mark for kickoff return TDs by a single player in a career.  Boykin and his Georgia teammates have a game with Boise State on Saturday night in Atlanta.  And Boykin also has a Twitter account.

Guess where this is going.

“Dear Coach petersen, I DARE you to Kick to me…. Sincerely, Me and my #dawgs.”

That’s what Boykin tweeted over the weekend to Broncos coach Chris Petersen.

According to The Athens Banner-Herald, Boykin said he told Mark Richt about his tweet after the fact.  “He was like, ‘OK, well now you’ve got to back it up.’”

Petersen laughed off the tweet when asked about it by the Boise media.  “The kick returner… wants a piece of me and I don’t even play.  Don’t direct that at me.  I don’t kick the ball.  He’s talking to the wrong guy.  I’m shanking it out of bounds.”

Boykin says he meant no disrespect.  But why give the other team any added motivation at all?  What’s the point?  How does that serve the Georgia football team well?

Fellow fuddy-duddy Mark Bradley of The AJC has a view similar to our own:

“If you’re the underdog in Saturday’s game and you’re coming off a 6-7 season, wouldn’t the better Bulldog course be to creep in — sorry to play fast and loose with my animals — on little cat feet?  I doubt Boise is going to be terrified at the though of facing the Tweetster, and if you have to rely on a gimmick for your swagger is it really swagger at all?”

Seeing Bradley blog post, Boyking tweeted a kind response to the sportswriter:

“‘Preciate that, Mr. Bradley.  Enjoyed reading it.”

If Boykin runs back kick for a touchdown he’ll be a hero to thousands of woofing Dawg fans.  But if he should fumble or in some other way bungle a return, whooo boy, his tweet will come back to bite him.

"Not just the pretty part" When was the last time Boise lost to a ranked opponent? Seriously..I'm not googling any of this..just going off memory. Also I'm not trying to flame anyone...Boise doesn't get beat when they have time to prepare for these games. Period.I'm not a Boise fan, but I appreciate the way they take 2 and 3 star recruits...mold them into men who play a certain role on their team extremely well...coaches who are some of the best in the country at game planning..They have a QB who is just plain smart..makes quick decisions..They already play with a chip on their shoulder..if not for a missed chip shot field goal last year they would have been playing in a BCS bowl at the end.
There is no reason to give them a reason to think you are dissing them. No matter how small it is..That dude better be ready when he fields a kickoff because there will be a few guys coming for him who will take great pleasure in being the one to level him.

Where was the smack talk? I just meant that we should view the whole picture, not just the pretty part. And yeah 6-7 happened. But right now UGA's record is just as good as any school's.

Bulldog, if you are going to go as far back as you did for the Oklahoma game, you may as well include 2005. Plenty of time then too...

Never bet against Boise. Never bet against Boise when they have more than the normal week to prepare for a team...any team. Ask Oklahoma. Ask Virginia Tech. Boise is already good at rallying the troops from the Rodney Dangerfield need to give them any extra motivation.

Normally I agree with your stance on tweets but this one seems harmless. Just a fun little remark not insulting the opposing team. Sounds like he's just excited to get back out there.

Nevada was ranked last year. And yes Chris Peterson is an awesome coach, but they have never been the favorite in a game like this. It is an unknown dynamic.

ballparkga, will be happy to add Oregon in there for you also. If you want to only go on recent history only all I have to say is 6-7...smack talk looks sort of silly.

Seems harmless, but let Boykin fumble a return and we'll see what Georgia fans have to say. I don't think he insulted the other team, I just wonder what the point of the tweet was. Why even go there?

Just my take. But certainly not as dumb a statement as many we've seen on Twitter.

Thanks for reading the site,

Weren't both of you basing your points on recent history?

"Why even go there" ? He made the AJC, your site, and countless others didn't he?

I don't see any harm in it. Post game if he didn't take one to the house you can have a million excuses on a return (unless like you said he fumbles) " They coffin cornered me.... I was six yards deep in the end zone on every one...etc etc etc..."

I hope he takes two back to the house ( This is coming from a Gator fan) Boise might be the favorite (by a mere field goal) but they lost a tandem at wideout that caught half there receptions, touchdown receptions, and receiving yardage. Both teams are a lot alike. Dawgs lost A.J. Green and Boise lost Pettis and Young. With a 95% UGA crowd making the dome a louder than usual home game for the Dawgs, I say they prove why the SEC is bosshog in college football.... LSU... well lets just hope there in the game late... I think Oregon is going to make that one UGLY!!!
