Spurrier Says There’s Good Competition At QB

At SEC Media Days last month, Steve Spurrier tried to make it clear that Stephen Garcia would not simply be handed the keys to this year’s offense.  The Carolina senior would have to beat out Connor Shaw for the starting role.

Spurrier says that’s just what’s happening.  “They’re still competing,” he told The Anderson Independent Mail.  “Connor was just as good as Stephen today, but Stephen I think has played a little bit better in most of the scrimmages thus far this year.  We’ll see what happens Saturday and go from there.”

Saturday will be the Gamecocks first full scrimmage of the preseason.

“We’re looking for guys who can play their assignments.  We’re looking for the quarterback play to be very good — better than maybe it’s been.”

We still think it’s unlikely that Spurrier would have put up with as much guff from the media for bringing Garcia back if he weren’t intending to once again run his offense.  Unless the veteran really gags in upcoming scrimmages, it’s hard to imagine Shaw beating him out with a possible SEC title run on the line.
