Derenbecker Leaving LSU’s Hoops Team

Trent Johnson has yet another face to replace when hoops practice begins in Baton Rouge in a few weeks.  Guard Matt Derenbecker announced today that he will be leaving the LSU program for personal reasons.  A press release from the school quoted the player as saying:

“After some discussion with my family and the coaching staff, I have decided to take some time away from basketball to address some personal matters.  In doing so, I will withdraw from LSU immediately.  I wish nothing but the best for my teammates and coaches as they move forward in continuing to rebuild the program.”

Johnson provided the following quote: “Matt is going through a tough time right now.  Playing basketball is not important.  We wish him the best as he moves forward.”

As a freshman Derenbecker — a two-time Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year in high school — averaged 6.5 points and 2.1 rebounds for the Tigers last season.  He started 16 games and showed improvement by the time the SEC schedule began.  He averaged 8.3 points per game while starting 15 of LSU’s 16 in-conference games.

Derenbecker was expected to develop into an outside shooting threat for the Tigers in 2011-12.
