Prospects Waiting On NCAA Investigations

Defensive end Sheldon Rankins from Covington, Ga., was close to committing to North Carolina when he visited the Tar Heels’ campus on June 13.

“Yes, I almost committed when I went up there for a visit but I didn’t want it to be a spur-of-moment thing,” Rankins told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I decided to wait a few days until I could get back home and think about it. When I got back, I heard all the talk about the NCAA sanctions and that has kind of delayed everything.”

Tennessee’s NCAA issues might have delayed its recruiting momentum as well. UT appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions last month and is weeks away from hearing a ruling.

UT’s football coaches will answer questions about those NCAA issues when they meet with Hammonton, N.J., linebacker Kaiwan Lewis, who’s strongly considering the Vols.

“I do worry about it because I don’t want to have to worry about not being able to compete for championships because that’s why we do this,” Lewis told ESPN.com. “You go out and compete every day. You want to win a championship. You want to go to a bowl game.”

Prospects around the country are asking those same questions about Oregon, which had a potential bomb dropped on it by Yahoo! Sports on July 1.

Scouting service owner Will Lyles told Yahoo! he was paid $25,000 by Oregon for his “access and influence with recruits,” among other services he provided prospects who eventually signed with Oregon. Ducks coach Chip Kelly has also been accused of attempting to cover up the wrongdoing.

Those allegations have caused recruits to think twice about their interest in Oregon.

“I don’t know what’s going on with them right now,” Hillsboro, Ore., linebacker Brett Bafaro told ESPN.com. “So I’m just waiting for that to kind of clear up and see what happens. They were my No. 1 school until all this happened.”

It’s also happened at Ohio State, Boise State and other schools around the country in recent months. Expect prospects to take a wait-and-see approach until they receive more definitive answers regarding the schools in question.

See Ohio State commit Bri’onte Dunn.

I’m 100 percent committed … right now,” Dunn told ESPN.com. “I went to Ohio State’s camp and spent some time with the coaches. They were excited to see what’s going to happen in September. They said everything should be back on track by the time I get there. I think coach (Luke) Fuckell is a good coach.”

But as Dunn said, that’s right now.
