Mullen Downplays Recruiting Rankings

Like most coaches, Dan Mullen says he’s not a slave to internet recruiting rankings.  Asked by Brandon Marcello of The Jackson Clarion Ledger if he can build a Top 10 team from a 35th-ranked recruiting class, Mississippi State’s coach responded thusly:

“Well, I’ll say this: I know our four-year average (in the recruiting rankings) was 33rd and Michigan was ninth.  You tell me which team you want to be involved with on a four-year average going into that (Gator Bowl) game.  In theory, they should be much better than we were but I don’t know if they were or if it was just that day.  When you look at that stuff, we go after players that fit our need.

To me, that’s where the recruiting rankings and perception and reality differ greatly.”

In case you’ve forgotten, Mullen’s Bulldogs ripped the Wolverines 52-14 in January’s Gator Bowl.
