ESPN’s Schad Says Slive Will Call For Change’s Joe Schad says SEC fans should expect “a powerful message from a powerful man” when Mike Slive takes the podium at Media Days in just a few minutes.

Schad said on ESPNU that Slive is expected to call for changes in the way the NCAA handles investigations and violations.

“He’s going to say there’s too much negativity, too much controversy, too many problems, too many off-field issues and that the time has come to re-evaluate the way these things are being looked into,” Schad said.  “And also to take a look at whether or not the best interests of student-athletes are coming into play.”

This should come as no surprise to anyone who follows the SEC closely.  Slive and the league’s presidents — despite the number of recent scandals in the SEC — usually walk lock-step with the NCAA on major issues.

President Mark Emmert wrote on the NCAA’s website yesterday that the time for change has come.  (We linked you to that site earlier today.)  It’s likely that Slive and Emmert are on the same page.  The timing of Emmert’s written piece — one day prior to Slive’s speech — sure make it appear as though the two have chatted.

We’ll see if Schad is right and if Slive calls for sweeping changes in the way the NCAA does business.  If so, expect him to do so in a positive manner that suggests “we’re all in this together.”
