With So Many New Faces, Complacency Not A Worry At Auburn

Most coaches coming off an undefeated, BCS championship season would be worried about complacency in their programs.  Last season — in that very situation — Nick Saban spent much of the offseason warning that his team 2010 would not be defending its 2009 title because his 2010 team, in fact, hadn’t won the previous year’s title.  He spoke on numerous occasions of team chemistry and collective personality.

Still, the Crimson Tide lost three games in its follow-up to its ’09 BCS championship.

Gene Chizik is going in a different direction than Saban this year, but his roster is dictating the change.  With so many stars and starters gone, there’s little reason for Auburn’s coach to worry about his players getting too fat and happy:

“One of the differences for us at Auburn is that we’re not returning a bunch of guys that started on last year’s team.  You’d probably have to be a little bit concerned about complacency and sort of a sense of entitlement maybe if you had a lot of older players coming back.  But that’s not the case with us.  What you’re going to see with Auburn this year is a lot of new faces and a lot of new names.

We’ve got guys just fighting for jobs continuously right now.  There are very few jobs settled on our team right now.  I think our players really understand that we put (the championship) in the rearview mirror and we’ve moved on.”
