UGA Staff Welcomes Back Ex-LB Gilbert

Fans love it when their school hires an old star to join the coaching staff at Hometown U.  Even when its the strength staff.  And that’s why some Georgia fans are likely happy this morning.

New Georgia strength and conditioning coach Joe Tereshinski — himself an ex-Dawg — has hired former UGA linebacker Tony Gilbert to serve as a strength assistant.  Gilbert was the caption of the Bulldogs’ 2002 SEC Championship team and recorded 114 tackles that season.  He then enjoyed a seven-year NFL career.

Mark Richt made it clear via press release that he’s glad to have one of his old players back in the fold:

“I’m thrilled to have Tony as part of our strength staff and program.  His experience as a member of a UGA SEC championship team and an NFL player is a perfect combination for us.  Our players will benefit greatly from his knowledge.”

Gilbert was initially expected to join Tereshinski’s staff as a student assistant, but this will be a full-time position.

Here’s a reminder of the kind of damage Gilbert could do on a football field:

And just because…

Yeah, I had the 45.  Kids, just Google it.
