Tuberville (Naturally) Thinks Auburn Deserves The 2004 BCS Title

Yesterday’s decision by the BCS to strip Southern Cal of its 2004 national championship kickstarted the debate over whether or not Auburn should be retroactively named champion.  No surprise here: Tommy Tuberville thinks the Tigers absolutely deserve the crown.

“Someone should be awarded (the) title,” he told Ted Miller of  “If not, the team that had to forfeit is not really punished.”

Not sure if we buy that argument, but certainly it’s natural for the coach of an undefeated SEC champion to campaign for a BCS title ring.  Let’s face it, the Tigers deserved a shot at the crown in 2004.  That became even more clear when Southern Cal thrashed Oklahoma 55-19 for the title.

But the Tigers weren’t the only undefeated team in the nation that season, and we’re not counting USC, either.  Urban Meyer’s Utah squad also wrapped up an unbeaten, untied season.  Now, did Utah play as tough a schedule as Auburn?  Is Utah as deserving of the title?  No.  But you’d you’d have a hard time convincing people in Utah of that fact.
