Saban Says No Rift With Muschamp

Will Muschamp is yet another branch off of the Nick Saban coaching tree.  Jimbo Fisher, Derek Dooley, now Muschamp.  And having served under Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins, Florida’s new coach has benefited from having the name of Alabama’s current coach attached to his own.

But some believe the relationship between the two men is/was strained following Saban’s decision to make Dom Capers his defensive coordinator in Miami in 2006 rather than Muschamp.  Saban denied that yesterday.

“I just made a mistake,” Saban said.  “When I went to Miami as the Dolphins coach, I didn’t want to put guys that were college coaches in coordinator positions until they’d coached in the league and got some experience.

“I had coached in the league for two years at Houston and became the (defensive) coordinator at Cleveland and it was really, really difficult, only being in the league two years and understanding the league, the personnel, match-ups and a lot of things.

“Dom did a wonderful job, but Will probably deserved that job.  But in my trying to protect him, I wanted him to get another year or two (in the NFL) before he was out there.  Coordinators get criticized in the NFL like head coaches in college.

“I was trying to protect people that were important to me.  I don’t think we have any issues or problems (now).”

UPDATE — Saban, Mushcamp and fellow former Saban assistant Derek Dooley all had lunch together today in Destin.
