Chizik Sounds Open To Grabbing QB Wilson

In all of America, there is one landing spot that makes the most sense for former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson — Auburn.

The Tigers could not settle their quarterback battle between Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley this spring.  And neither of those QBs has the run/pass dual-threat ability that made Cam Newton so effective in Gus Malzahn’s spread-option system last year.

Wilson — on the other hand — led the ACC in total offense last year as a passer and as a wicked scrambler.  See below:

If they want, Auburn can approach Wilson and show him tape of last year’s Tiger offense, asking a very simple question in the process: “How’d you like to be this year’s Cam Newton?”

So how interested is Auburn?  Gene Chizik couldn’t speak about a specific prospect when asked about Wilson yesterday, but’s Chris Low reports that Chizik made it pretty clear he’s all about finding the best signal-caller he can for his Tigers.

“When it comes to the recruiting part of it, my job as the head coach at Auburn is to make sure we’re developing our roster the best way we see fit to help Auburn win,” Chizik said.  “So as we go down the recruiting road, whoever gives us that opportunity to win at Auburn, whether it’s a junior college transfer or high school (player) or whoever we feel fits the bill to continuously improve Auburn’s football team to give us a chance to compete for the championship, then obviously that’s my job and I’m for it.”

So Auburn could grab an experienced starter who offers the run/pass threat that Newton did.  And Wilson could land in an offense that in one-year turned Newton from a juco transfer into a Heisman winner and top overall NFL draft pick.

Obviously, a lot of different things go into these decisions, but from a purely football perspective, Wilson and the Tigers appear to be a perfect match.
