Calipari Gets Raise, 2-Year Extension From UK

The SEC is close to having a six-million dollar man.  And John Calipari won’t even have to fight a Sasquatch to get it.

Kentucky’s hoops coach received a two-year contract extension today as well as a raise that will push his annual salary to $5.75 million by the 2018-19 season.  (Conceivably, when he opens his wallet he may hear that da-da-da-da-da-da sound from “The Six Million Dollar Man.”)

“What John Calipari has done on and off the court in the past two years to reunite and rejuvenate this fan base has been magical,” AD Mitch Barnhart said in a statement.  “He understands the responsibility that goes along with this position and there is no other coach out there that is a better fit for the basketball program in the country.”

Calipari’s base salary will remain at $400,000 with the rest of the cash coming from media ties, endorsement opportunities and bonuses.  The total package is worth $36.5 million.

“The people of Kentucky have embraced our family as one of their own and we love being here,” Calipari said in the school’s release.  “And there is no other place we’d rather be.  Our fans are the best in all of sports and even though you’re crazy, we love it.”
