UGA-Clemson Scheduled To Meet Again

Good news, SEC fans.  One of the South’s best non-annual football rivalries will kickoff once again in two years.

Georgia has confirmed that they will travel to Death Valley to face off with the ACC’s Clemson Tigers to open the 2013 season.  The following year, the Tigers will return the favor and open the season in Athens.

The two schools are separated by just 75 miles and have met 62 times down through the years.  From 1973 through 1987 the Tigers and Dawgs squared off yearly.

This CBS open from the 1987 game should help frame the rivalry for the uninitiated (and get a little blood stirring for any Southern football fan):

As a lad growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina, I can still remember Kevin Butler’s 60-yard field goal to give UGA a 26-23 win over the Clem(p)son back in 1984.  For that matter, enjoy Larry Munson’s call of that game — one of his best.

The last time the teams played, UGA trumped the Tigers 30-0 back in 2003.

Georgia also announced that it’s game with North Texas in 2013 has been moved back to September 21st to make room for the Clemson opener on August 31st.

Good stuff.
