Spurrier Sounds Like A Man Who Wants Garcia Back

Appearing on Paul Finebaum’s radio show yesterday, Steve Spurrier sounded like a coach who wants his quarterback back.  It’s no secret that Spurrier has never been taken with Stephen Garcia’s lack of dedication to his craft, but that doesn’t mean the Ol’ Ball Coach doesn’t know who he needs to have starting under center this fall.

Spurrier downplayed the seriousness of Garcia’s missteps and might have also given some credence to the belief that the university overreacted to the QB’s latest error in judgement:

“Well, Stephen has had, aw, just several little, minor, immature behavior issues.  That’s about all it is.  And we wish he could act a little bit more like a first-class student-athlete.  But we’ll see what happens here in the next month or so.  He’s just suspended from the team until the university — which is the athletic director, the president, maybe myself — will decide how he’s coming along and go from there.”

Did you notice that bit about “maybe myself?”  Yeah, that stood out to us, too.

If the USC administration does not see fit to reinstate Garcia — though we believe they will — Spurrier said that backup quarterback Connor Shaw is “ready to go” in his absence.

On another note, Carolina’s coach also touched on the topic of top signee Jadeveon Clowney saying that the defensive end still has to get his test score up to qualify.  Clowney does have time to do that and — for now at least — he is expected to join the team in July.
