Petrino’s Deal Shows Coach’s Commitment To Arkansas

The 45-page contract between Arkansas and football coach Bobby Petrino has now been made public — thanks to a Freedom of Information request — and its contents show the coach’s commitment to staying in Fayetteville.

Most of the deal’s facts figures have been known for a while:

* Petrino will make an average of $3.56 million per year through the 2017 season.

* Petrino and Arkansas have matching buyout clauses.  If UA fires Petrino in the next two seasons, it will owe him $18 million.  If Petrino leaves, he will owe the school $18 million.  The twin buyouts remain at $10 million five years into the pact.  It has been publicized that Petrino himself asked for the unheard of steep, matching buyouts in an effort to quell rumors that he might leave Arkansas… a notion that has been used against him on the recruiting trail.

There is also a new non-compete clause in the coach’s deal that would prevent him from leaving the Hogs to coach any other SEC program.

The coach also has a new $100,000 bonus worked into his deal just in case he brings Arkansas a BCS championship.  Here’s guessing that’s a bonus AD Jeff Long would be more than happy to pay.
