Newton Criticized, Moon Cries Racism

Earlier this week, NFL draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki went a tad over the line — in our opinion — in his review of former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton.  His comments read as if they came from an opposing fan and not a professional analyst:

“Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup.  Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them.  Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room.”

Oh, and that fake smile…

Fake smile?  That’s kind of “in the eye of the beholder” isn’t it?  Who can really say if someone has a fake smile or not?

But according to ProFootballTalk.com, Nawrocki is “one of the most respected draft analysts in the business.”  And according to Nawrocki he’s “received calls and messages from NFL teams suggesting that he ‘hit it on the head’ in his evaluation.”

Well, former NFL (and CFL) great Warren Moon isn’t pleased with Nawrocki’s criticism of Newton.  And unfortunately, he blames the criticism on racism.

“A lot of the criticism he’s receiving is unfortunate and racially based,” Moon told CBSSports.com.  “I thought we were all past this.  I don’t see any other quarterbacks in the draft being criticized by the media or fans about their smile or called a phony. … He’s being held to different standards from white quarterbacks.  I thought we were past all this stuff about African-American quarterbacks, but I guess we’re not.”

Note to Moon: Do a quick Google search on “Ryan Mallett” and “character issues” and then kindly shut the hell up.

Racism is a very real issue in our world and it’s not going away.  As long as they under-educated in our society continue to pass their imbecilic beliefs from one generation to the next, racism will continue.

But it doesn’t help matters when someone like Moon blames something he doesn’t like on racism.  It trivializes a very real issue.  It’s called “crying wolf.”

Newton — in this case — is basically being called a two-face by Nawrocki.  Mallett — the white ex-Arkansas quarterback — has basically been called a two-face in multiple media reports.  There have also been rumors of drug use and a lack of leadership skills.  Those who dig into the matter seem to find no meat on them bones, however.

Moon has an ax to grind because he was sentenced to several seasons in the Canadian league before finally being given his shot in the NFL.  At which point he threw up some Hall of Fame numbers.

But Moon came out of college in 1978.

JaMarcus Russell — black — was selected #1 overall in the 2007 NFL draft.  A year earlier Vince Young — black — was selected #3 overall, ahead of Matt Leinert and Jay Cutler.

It’s not 1978 anymore and Moon’s claims simply don’t ring true.

Newton isn’t dealing with criticism because he’s African-American.  He’s dealing with criticism because players are vivisected before each year’s player selection meeting.

And it’s the same kind of criticism Mallett — who’s white — has been facing.

HoustonVol,

No worries. All will be forgiven if you simply ignore Ben.

One item that people are forgetting - Newton is being considered for the top pick in the draft - Mallett will be lucky to break the first round. Remember the whole Wonderlict talk about VYoung, and all of the talk about Russell being a waste of a pick (which he was). When a QB is zeroed in as the top pick, they are picked apart. Tebow was picked apart last year because of his start status, and it had nothing to do with the color of his skin. So one person had the opinion that Cam Newton had a "you can't touch this" attitude and look about him. Gee - a Hiesman winning QB, who the center of the college football universe for the past 6 months and more hams it up to the camera and has a constant poop-eating grin about him and gets called out on it - and someone pulls the race card. Nope sorry, not going to buy it. Newton thinks he is all that and a bag of chips. he will be a flop in the NFL because he does not think he has to work to succeed. College ball was like playing in the park. He will have to do an honest days work in the NFL. Seeing the upbringing that he has, he daddy never taught him how to do a honest days work.

I couldn’t agree with Warren Moon more, and at the same time disagree with you Mr. Pennington. After reading Nawrocki's entire report I was forced to draw the same logical conclusion as Warren Moon. If he would have provided some actual facts and hard evidence to support his extreme claims then his motives wouldn't have been so questionable, but since that was not the case and with no physical sources to back his claims, he obviously made those observations on his on personal opinions. I am therefore inclined to infer that his motivations led him down the path of creating a racially motivated Trojan horse which attempts to pass itself off as an official and legitimate scouting report.

The so called fact that Mallete has received similar criticism is a logical fallacy at best. Has Mallete received such extreme criticisms without any factual evidence to support it? Has Mallete received unsubstantiated and extreme criticisms by Nawrocki as well? Has Mallete proven himself to be a championship collegiate quarterback who willed his team to victory on several occasions?

If Nawrocki is the respected and experienced scouting analyst he is claimed to be then Warren Moon's assumption carries justified weight. Why would a grizzled veteran such as Nawrocki attack a young and upcoming athlete on non-football related issues such as his smile? It’s immature and downright embarrassing that things like this still exist and aren’t scolded for what they truly are. Historically speaking Afro American men used to be accused of having sinister motives for smiling at white women. Can you not see the racial overtones in his comments or have you chosen to forget history?

Instead of our knee jerk reaction to always defend against racial accusations we need to be honest and call it like we see it. There hasn't been a single prospect in this year’s draft that has been attacked in such a manner on matters that can't be categorized or even remotely proven to be true or even football related. The motives behind Nawrocki's report should make us wonder how he can be considered a credible and honest NFL scout. Even more important how he can be considered an honest and trustworthy human being.

John,

Love the site, but I have an issue with some of what you have written. You seem to take offense to some of the the things that are posted on this board by fans. Most usually when they are criticizing you for something that you have written. That is their opinion and they are entitled to it just as Moon is. Telling Moon to "shut the hell up" is not professional and does nothing to help your argument. To respond to someone's idiotic rant, and it was a ridiculous comment by Moon, with a comment such as that is in no way productive. I could be wrong, but I do not recall anyone attacking Mallet on his appearance. Or the way he presents himself. Now that I have done to you what you did to Moon, I am going to go back to enjoying this beautiful day in East Tennessee. As always keep up the good work and I do love the site.
