Auburn Writer Accuses Bama Of Paying Signee Calloway

If you read this site regularly, you know that we have time and again said that the SEC is entering a danger zone when it comes to NCAA accusations.  Mike Slive has said on occasion that only the SEC can stop the SEC.  That appears to be happening.

Today, Jeffrey Lee of AuburnSports.com — the Rivals site covering AU — went on Mobile, Alabama radio station WNSP-FM and accused Alabama of buying recent signee Brent Calloway.

Lee has posted online a number of bulletpoints that are circulating on SEC messageboards this morning.  Those points include:

* A supporter of Alabama took Calloway to Tuscaloosa multiple times including the weekend prior to national signing day.

* The supporter allegedly then drove Calloway out of state and kept him there until he returned to his hometown of Russellville, Alabama on signing day.

* Before Calloway’s final trip to Tuscaloosa pre-signing day, the Bama supporter allegedly made cash payments to Harland “Peaches” Winston who is Calloway’s adoptive father.

* Winston supposedly received $2,500 from the Bama fan on at least one occasion.

* Supposedly, Winston also received aid in catching up on his home mortgage.

* The fan also allegedly provided Calloway with a new car that the player drove to school.  Supposedly enough questions were asked about the car that it was returned on the same day.

* Allegedly, the car was purchased by the Bama supporter from a dealership in Muscle Shoals owned by yet another Alabama supporter.

* Supposedly, the supporter told Calloway that he would receive $1,200 per month while playing at Alabama.

Calloway’s recruitment was a soap opera from the get-go.  The player even claimed to have received death threats.

Calloway was a four-star outside linebacker prospect who was ranked the fifth best linebacker in the country and the 38th best player in the nation by Rivals.com.

Stay tuned… you can be sure you’ll hear a lot more about this one.  Great.  Another off-field scandal.

And the SOUTH is the "Bible Belt"? How much more petty and un-Christian can you get than the GREAT SEC and their mud-slinging? Tennessee and Alabama are the worst of the bunch. I would love to see them "do-each-other-in"!! Or, if not that, maybe the NCAA needs to "do-in" the SEC!!!!! Talk about "screwed-up" priorities! (and on all sides-Ihope you "big-shot" liars get your come-uptance)

At issue are allegations made Thursday morning by Auburn Rivals reporter Jeffrey Lee on Mobile radio station WSNP. Among Lee’s allegations were that an Alabama supporter – subsequently identified as Woodruff — paid Winston $2,500 for Calloway to commit to Alabama, as well as supplying Calloway a new car. Lee also alleged Woodruff pulled Calloway out of school in the days leading up to signing day, taking him on a trip to Florida.

Woodruff told TideSports.com that he’s “confident the truth will come out.” Ricky Danley, the new cars sales manager at the dealership where Woodruff allegedly acquired the vehicle given to Calloway, told the website that Woodruff had merely taken the car in question — a Camaro — out on an extended test drive before returning it due to handling issues at high speeds.

It's time to end the yearly Alabama- Auburn series again. Alabama survived without playing Auburn for 41 years, and we can do it again.
Auburn survived and can do it again, Stop the series before both schools are ruined and before someone is killed

Well being a former player, most people don't understand that all your school is paid for when you are on scholarship and you then receive pell grants to live. Most people have to have pell grants to pay for school, but as players we had pell grants and work study programs that gave us spending money to live on. Now as for this pay for play scheme that Mr. aubie thinks he has on Calloway and family, he better think twice since he clearly stated he had no proof and could not prove any of it since Bama did such a good job of covering it up by paying all cash. Well, if you have no proof then should not be telling the story, cause law suits will be forthcoming in near future.

State of Alabama football fans will help take both Alabama and Auburn football programs down and I for one will enjoy watching it! After watching, listening to or reading about what all goes on in the state of Alabama around these programs why would any intelligent caring parent anywhere in the country other than the state of Alabama send their child to either one of these schools. Lets see a couple of years ago a fan from one of the schools shot an opposing fan after one of their games and this year a "bright" jealous Alabama fan poisions live oak trees at Auburn! Whats next Picking off the opposing teams players as they walk down the street?! I don't think sending my child to play in a place where Auburn fans think is God's country or to a place where Alabama fans think he would actually be playing for "God" himself (some actually think that of Saban), is worth exposing him becoming anything remotely like them.

all I'll say is how did a dirt poor Mark barron buy a Chrysler 300? Alabama could get the death penalty. They need to put up a statue of the Grim Reaper. Am I happy? I really don't care. I do hate jerky fans but I feel bad for the good fans. but it's over Bama. They are going to look at all those nice cars that dirt poor kids are driving. It's over.

John, Funny how when Bama is accused of wrong doing you lead the story by saying only the SEC can stop itself, but when other schools are accused its Katie Bar the Door! Just saying>

Wasn't there a story about the NCAA or FBI searching and taking a computer from Bama? Maybe Bama and MSu were both part of the rat pack.

TRUTH IS OUT THERE

Let me say this. I would bet my life and my kids life that both of these Institutions of Higher Learning (or their fans) provide extra benefits to their players, either directly or in-directly. I know it, you know it, everybody knows it. It is the system in which they operate. However just like everything else today news travels much faster and farther. But you can take this to the bank. What is bad for Auburn is not always good for Alabama. And what is bad for Alabama is not always good for Auburn. If we keep bashing each other and turning each other in we will find a branch office of the NCAA in the state for the next 10 years.

To blame Bama for allegations against AU is ridiculous. The Cam Newton investigation started based on information turned over by Miss. State (a university that was directly involved). That investigation is still pending and has nothing to do with UA. Skipping ahead to the HBO special, that was a situation brought to life by members of the AU family. These players were directly involved with the situation. That investigation is still pending and has nothing to do with UA. Now we have a writer with an obvious bias towards AU (that makes his money getting more AU fans to read his work) making claims of a situation he is not directly involved in? I’m not naive enough to claim that these allegations are without a doubt false. At the same time, I’m not stupid enough to buy into the words of a writer representing such a bitter fan base with no creditability. Does this guy know the “Bama fan” that made the payment? Did BC tell this guy the information he knows? Understand that all of the mess AU is in right now is because of AU. Stop trying to push your self-induced black eyes on us. Until I read an article about this that didn’t get published between a pigpen and a chicken coup, I’m just going to laugh it off as AU being AU.

Here's a theory: Maybe the staffer who went from MSU to Bama leaked the Cam stuff to Cecil Hurt, who then got together with Paul Finebaum and they kicked it upstairs to the NY Times, and now will rue the day they started this whole mess. Just a theory.

I will no longer read anything from Rivals as long as their employees are held to a sub standard of accountability. I will not renew my subscription!! As long as Jeff Lee is employed at Rivals I encourage all people who value integrity in sports journalism to ban their services. You can't go around publicly blasting people when your only evidence is a handful of sour grapes. Rivals is taking a big risk here. I've already seen many comments on other boards expressing concern for the value and integrety of articles from Rivals, past, current and future. The big news here is not this fabrication but the decline of reputable journalism in college sports today.

1. FACT: Cecil Newton shopped Cam. This is not in dispute and Auburn admitted it
2. FACT: Auburn has four players saying they were paid.
3. FACT: Auburn remains the second most sanctioned program in NCAA history. Second only to SMU

This is hilarious, why would Bama pay him? He is a 4 star recruit and they already had the top player at the position. Calloway was not a must have recruit in this class, especially at running back. The barn is gasping for air and desperately trying to deflect. It's getting hot in the kitchen down there isn't it boys.

Yea right. This is called “spin” by the Barners. They are on the ropes and have nothing else. All this tells me is that the flames on the ship that once was Auburn are growing and it’s time for them to man the life boats. after this goes away, and it will in short order, you will start to see the rats jumping overboard. First one off the ship, Gus Malzahn. He can still salvage a career but this will put a huge black eye on him along with his time at ARK. Once he rolls the horse will be out of the barn,(no pun intended) and everyone on staff will suffer. My opinion is in less than one year Auburn will have to replace a head coach, the AD, and many of the major boosters will be banned. Oh and they will have to replant those stupid trees too. Roll Tide!

Sounds like the shoe is on the other foot and that foot doesn't like it. In light of Bama being the most heavily penalized school in the NCAA over the last 25 years, this could be the death penalty for them.

It's time somebody stepped up and nailed the bammers for their flagrant violations in recruiting. I think they must have reached a point of arrogance that they didn't mind kids driving new cars days after signing with them or leaving a paper trail. You can bet Jeffery Lee has some proof or he wouldn't have said what he said. This is only beginning and I look forward to the turds getting hit again, especially after what they did to Cam Newton.

Does everyone forget Scott Moore Bama booster) lobbing the first grenade by claiming to have Cecil Newton on tape, and went on every radio show who would let him on, smearing Auburn. It was then discovered it was all a hoax, the tapes were fabricated. This is just return fire from the Auburn side. Bama started it, so they need to stop crying foul.

If bama has alreaady lawyered up, it sounds pretty guilty to me. Living outside the state of alabama we know that the allegations against auburn come from bama through their red elephant club machine. Both auburn and bama need to chill and stop the mud slinging (although up to this point bama has been doing all the slinging). I believe the SEC is about to implode.

mikey

Callaway played bammer. He got the money after he decommitted to Bama, no need to pay him if he is already in the stable. The offers came after he switched to Auburn. So if he dissed Auburn, that means Auburn did not pay him but Bama did?

thomas,

To show you the validity of this accusation. Attorney's are already involved for at least one of the people Lee "spouted off" about. This isn't going to end pretty for Mr. Lee. Also, how many UT website writers go investigate the Aggies or Sooners as part of their jobs? NOBODY is as dirty as the internet "writers" for the AU sites. Just watch.

thomas

Awesome. Funny how the bama supporters don't like the shoe being on the other foot when it comes to baseless allegations. Shocking... If this story shocks anyone supporting the Tide, your crimson goggles are in need of a major cleaning. I can't say I'm sympathetic to Auburn situation but in light of all the allegations with no proof, one does have to question if Bama fans and supporters started most of this and this is merely return fire from the Auburn camp. It seems that if one story on Auburn fails to gain traction, a new one pops up. However, not one of them has proof or will tell the whole truth which is starting to raise doubts. Will be interesting to see if anything comes of this since this kid was also recruited heavily by Auburn. Regardless, the SEC is getting very close to being the next Southwest Conference. Would be a shame because it is the best football in the country hands down. Maybe both sides need to get over themselves and be happy for the success in what is otherwise a 90% wasteland state... You lose Auburn and Bama football, there isn't much left except for Gulf Shores and the RTJ golf trail.. Truth hurts but you guys have your priorities all jacked up.

(yawn) Guy, there are MANY flaws to your comment (you obviously don't know ANYTHING about the State of Alabama). I wish I had the time to address them all. But ONE error that stands out is the "bright" Alabama fan that poisoned the Auburn trees. This poisoning guy is a native Texan who actually didn't move to Alabama until he was in his 40s. (He retired as a Texas Highway Patrolman.) Also, he admitted to not fully understanding the whole Alabama/Auburn rivalry. (I heard him say those very words myself on the radio.) Yeah, he named his kids this and that, but he's just someone who wants to align himself with something; he wants something to be a part of.

What happened is that we had a Texas transplant who put his dirty hands in the middle of OUR football rivalry, and tried to turn it into something NO ONE wanted. I'd say the exact same thing if he wore Orange and Blue.

adam...

There's no difference between this post and any others regarding SEC schools:

1. We don't believe these reports until there's proof, but since EVERYONE is talking about them, we bring them to our readers attention... by definition, it's news.

2. We don't like any of these stories and we've repeatedly warned that overzealous fans trying to tear down rival programs run the risk of tearing down the whole league.

Unless stated otherwise, that's the way this site has viewed every accusation since 2008 when we launched.

Dat,

J. Lee is NOT the media!!!! He runs the AU Rivals site! He was also implicated in the AU Big Cat Weekend violations. Compare the real media reports vs. an AU SITE. HUGE difference. He and his site are about to be sued out of existence by those he has defamed and their attorneys.

Johnny boy....you are a delusinal one... aren't you. All SEC schools know that bama is the most heavily sanctioned school by the ncaa. Your beloved bama has been on probation for over 12 years and is STILL on probation. bama fans need to wake up and smell the coffee. Y'all aren't fooling anybody with all your bomb lobbing at auburn. bama runs the dirtiest program in the SEC and the arrogance is unreal. You do understand that y'all are STILL ON PROBATION....right?? If this stuff turns out to be true....they will be playing Tuscaloosa HS football games in BDS instead of bama games. My advice to bama is to stop the bomb throwing.

thomas,

LOL, HUGE difference. NONE of the AU accusations came from an ALABAMA biased writer!!!! He "writes" for an AU website! He was involved in AU getting in trouble over Big Cat weekend and if you see my post he has "outed" a Rivals subscriber using personal info from Rivals and posting in on the AU site. He has ZERO credibility when discussing Alabama. Who has accused and reported on AU? HBO, Fox Sports, Yahoo Sports, the New York Times, ESPN. I know for a FACT Alabama turned AU in over the recruitment of two of Alabama's signees this year. You connect the dots. I would imagine Rivals and yahoo may fire Mr. Lee by the end of the day or at the very least you will see him issue a retraction. Also, him doing something as stupid as this tells me there is more bad news coming regarding AU and they are trying everything they can do to deflect. Word is a couple of their signees are trying to get releases to go elsewhere.

johnmrsec
johnmrsec

Bama's Got 13...

We cover the news of the SEC on this site. When a Rivals writer goes on a radio station and claims that an SEC signee has been paid by a booster, that is news. It will be talked about. It will be discussed.

Therefore, we made our readers aware of this accusation. We didn't say it's accurate, didn't say it's a lie, either. We simply provided the info. Just as we did last week regarding the HBO Four and Auburn... and the Patrick Peterson claims from a former Texas A&M assistant coach.

This site is for people who want to news of the day from around the conference brought to them by people who have no allegiance to any one school. In other words, if this story had involved any of the other 11 SEC schools, it would have appeared in the same spot... written in the exact same way.
